Some thoughts on how we might get from where we’re at now to a Second Civil War
Foriegn Policy ^ | October 10, 2017 | Thomas E. Ricks

Lt. Col. Robert F. McTague, U.S. Army (Ret.) Best Defense office of Second Civil War affairs

If we have a second Civil War, trying to understand what is happening will feel more like Ukraine in 2014 than Virginia in 1861.

Our first Civil War was primarily about slavery, but that was in the context of social and economic models in the South that were ripe for extinction. The South’s reaction was to launch a last-ditch effort to maintain and prop up its way of life at all costs, so it was visceral and violent.

Likewise, Trump’s election was an angry, defiant death throe, a angry cry against demographic and economic changes that are in fact irreversible. So, if you are a New Right strategist today — call them the Great Disruptors — the question is, how do you confront those inevitabilities?

First, you continue at the low level, with some really advanced, effective gerrymandering, as in Wisconsin. You continue to enflame working class whites, who have been ignored by the Democrats for decades. You also try to limit immigration and free trade as much as possible.

Even so, even as they do this, the New Right’s Disruptors know they can slow down changes to the nation, but they can’t stop them. So what’s the next step? You up the ante. You make it holy war. You persuade your base that there is no other way but violence. I believe many, perhaps most, of the members of Trump’s base will sign up for that.

Why? Because they will believe they are on the side of good, of right, of Americanism.

Many people in the South and heartland in general often think of themselves as patriotic, loyal Americans, more so than “liberals,” “Yankees,” “elites” and people from the North and urban areas.....

“After you read them you’ll fall on your knees in gratitude that slavery in this world was essentially stopped by one man.”

First, I didn’t realize that slavery in the world has stopped.

Second, I knew that before the War Between the States, many if not most countries had, indeed, ended slavery. Peacefully.

Which leads to a direct question: Do you think Lincoln fought the war to end slavery?

“How so?”

Your suggestion that I had “cherry picked” a Lincoln quote to portray him in a false light was off-target.

This is actually the third civil war in America. If you think about it The American Revolution was the first. Loyalist Americans fought Patriot Americans who were fighting the British.

First, I didn’t realize that slavery in the world has stopped.

It's stopped as an open State Approved Institution...YOU MUST KNOW THAT. That's the definition.

Not one Nation in the world that allows slavery today.

Of course it still exists...on an individual level of evil, but that's not what we're talking about. The evil known as slavery is NOT an officially approved social custom in any country in the world today.

That's what Lincoln changed. Before Lincoln slavery existed as a legal option in many countries around the world - including here in the United States. His ideas ended that...

NOW ALL nations have laws against slavery.

Even in a places as backward as Africa and the Middle-East there are laws against slavery. In short - SLAVERY AS AN INSTITUTION HAS BEEN STOPPED.

Don’t worry about it. No offense was intended and none was taken.

“Of course it (slavery) still exists...on an individual level of evil, but that's not what we're talking about.”

According to Anti-Slavery International, it is a bit more than just an individual level problem. That organization estimates there are 40.3 million slaves in the world today.

But you are right, in part. Slavery today is not the bad kind like that written into the US constitution by the slave states of New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Delaware, Rhode Island, and Maryland and the rest.

Today, according to Anti-Slavery International, slavery involves forced work, control by mental or physical abuse or threat of harm, dehumanized treatment, and restrictions on freedom of movement.

ALL slavery is the 'bad kind'... my point was that slavery is against the law ... everywhere.

“ALL slavery is the ‘bad kind’... my point was that slavery is against the law ... everywhere. “

And illegal immigration in the US is . . . well, against the law.

But we have 10 million or more illegal immigrants in the US for a reason: it is permitted. By the federal government (until 9 months ago). And by a lot of people in US society.

You are right, de jure slavery has been eliminated, if you accept the contention that governments like North Korea do not use slave labor.

The reported 40 million slaves that exist today are in bondage de facto.

Still, you would have to say they are slaves.

I guess you could deny they are slaves.

Murder exists in our society - but I can assure you - it's NOT 'permitted'. Not to belabor the point but 'laws' are not created by 'polls' or 'norms'... To talk we have to accept standard definitions of terms.

That said, I'll give you the point on North Korea. What the Norks engage in is so close to 'slave labor' that it might as well be slave labor. You win that one.

Thank you. Not for agreeing with me on a small point (you disagree on others) but for your consistently cordial tone. We need more of that on this site. Myself included.

Read this and thought of you jeffersondem.. go to link to read the whole article...Mason Wever's cracked the code - the key to freedom - to ending slavery - is ending a self imposed slave mentality...ending the after-image - the shadow that slavery left... on a culture.

The old culture of servicing must be replaced with a culture of thriving. It has to be us who accomplish this; it cannot be anyone else. It will not be achieved with programs, cliches, marches, protests, demonstrations or demands. And it cannot be achieved through kneeling down or burning down. Neither raised fists nor bowed heads will lift us up.

We need to accept full and complete responsibilities for the condition of our families. If it is not our fault, then we are still slaves. If our children are not protected by us, then they also are slaves.

How did we end up begging to be treated better, seeking safe spaces, demanding separation from white people and shivering away from trigger words? If America won’t give you 40 acres and a mule, buy one. If the police are too harsh, then elect another chief. Men should marry and protect women, women that will live for their husbands and children, and those children should be in a safe environment created by the parents.

About five paragraphs of nonsense. The author is a retired Army officer who apparently prefers the America of Barney Frank over the America of Reagan.
