Universal Credit is 'putting people in poverty', charities warn (UK)

The Government is being urged to pause the mass roll-out of its new benefits system next week as charities warn it is forcing people into poverty.

Since 2013, Universal Credit has been introduced relatively slowly to around five selected job centres a month.

The system is designed to simplify the way claimants are paid merging six existing benefits, including housing benefit and jobseeker's allowance, into one monthly payment.

Sky News went to one of their centres in Oldham to find out if that was the case.

In the two days I was there I met people like Debbie and Steven who, through addiction, had run out of benefit money and are desperate for help.

Like many people, Debbie openly admitted that her need was self-inflicted.

She said: "My problem is alcohol basically. But I recently got into some drugs as well and was spending £100 a day. Now I can't afford to buy my food."

Another man, recovering alcoholic Steven, told me he is worried about being responsible for paying his rent out of the lump sum. Previous Housing Benefit was paid direct to rent takers.

He said: "I think it's totally wrong [to pay benefits monthly] because you're giving people like me who are vulnerable and alcoholic money in their hand in one lump sum where they're just going to blow it all."

The Department For Work And Pensions has routinely defended the system and said in a statement: "The best way to help people improve their lives and increase their incomes is through employment, and Universal Credit claimants are moving into jobs faster and staying in work longer than under the old system.

It’s not stated, but I assume this applies to the UK?

Yes. It’s not a U.S. program.

The symbol for the British pound, "£", was kind of a dead giveaway. Yes, this IS in England, where they have probably tried every kind of socialist and social justice program ever devised in this world.

And the nation lost its empire and much of its former glory over this infatuation with social experimentation.

People who cannot take care of themselves depend on the Nanny Socialist State to do everything for them. They take no responsibility for themselves and expect the hard working masses to take care of them, in the name of GOVERNMENT. Sadly, too many in our country also believe in the Nanny State. Prayers that we can reverse this trend.

I say give them all 200,000 once in their lifetime and be done with them. That’ll fix it.

With UC the recipient will go pay whatever bills are late and perhaps one that is due and spend the rest on whatever strikes his fancy at the moment. Better having several payments spaced through the month. For each one something will be immediately due and is more apt to get paid. The welfare bum will only be totally broke for sperhaps a week at a time instead of 29 contiguous days each month.

"People who cannot take care of themselves depend on the Nanny Socialist State to do everything for them."

They had a nanny state during WW2, liked it, and decided to keep it.

Moves made down the entropy gradient are usually permanent.

I think the Nanny State started around the end of WW2. Didn’t their Socialized Medicine health care start right after WW2?

These types of systems have a benefit, though not in the way the creators intend.

They tell us plainly who believes and/or teaches that a government money tree is the tree of life, sustenance. They tell us who wants and demands gifts from a thief, who is the biggest bully on the block.

The government money tree is a tree of LIE, because nobody gathers figs from thistles, or grapes from thorns.

So it's good to know who eats from the tree of LIE, because as they say,

"You are what you eat."

It got written into permanent law after.

During WW2, basically the entire country was drafted into the army. The class structure partially dissolved in a spirit of shared sacrifice.

After the war, they wanted to keep the feeling, so the nanny state was born in the UK.

We pay the EITC in one check and then Best Buy cleans up.

What these people, the druggies, want is for the gov to divvy their check up and pay their bills for them. He said he can’t be trusted to pay his bills. He can’t be trusted to buy food first.

It is why we have EBT cards. The money must be spent on food. But, haha, the recipients are not always stupid. Around here they buy premium meats and then sell them. Literally, they buy ribeyes, from the local butcher, really nice cuts, for $15/ lb each steak weighing precisely 1/2 lb. for which they sell for $5 each. These people are sometimes literally emaciated.

What a deal. Get on welfare and have the gubmint pay for your habit to the point where you have no money left for food.

That’s not the progressive way. If you gave them nothing they wouldn’t be under your thumb and would learn to take care of themselves. Get with the program Bud.

Which is why they kicked Churchill to the curb at the end of WWII.

I can't see how it is the responsibility of anyone else to fix this lady's problem for her.
