JACKSON, Miss. —

The Jackson chapter of the NAACP plans to ask local high school and college football players to take a knee at their next game, leaders said Tuesday.

President Donald Trump on Sunday called for fans to boycott NFL games unless the league takes action against players who choose to kneel during the national anthem. Advertisement

Following a weekend of kneeling and protesting across the NFL, the Cowboys and their owner displayed their own version of unity Monday night by kneeling on the field before rising as a group before the playing of the national anthem.

Jackson State University head football coach Tony Hughes, who is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, said he has spoken to his team about the controversy.

“I shared something with my team in the midst of all this,” Hughes said. “What the true colors of the flag actually mean. Red is the blood that we shed, blue is the boldness and the white is the purity of our country and the integrity of our country that stands for equality and giving people access to be successful in life. Growing up as an African-American in rural Mississippi, I take a lot of pride in the United States of America giving me an opportunity to do what I love to do and coach a sport that’s so competitive.”

In an interview Monday with 16 WAPT News, Pearl High School head football coach John Perry said the issue of standing or kneeling during the national anthem has not come up yet with his players.

“I don’t know. You would hate to have to cross that bridge, but we would hope that all of our kids would stand up and honor those that have fought for this country and the freedoms that we have. If they want to make a statement in other ways, then that is on them,” Perry said.

A news conference is scheduled for Thursday, at which time local and state NAACP leaders are expected to ask local football players to kneel during games.

I would kneel for no one. Certainly not for NAACP racists. And double especially not because black criminals are dying in gun battles with the police.
