A Roy Moore Ricochet
US News ^ | 9/25/17 | David Catanese

Roy Moore's likely victory in Tuesday's Alabama Republican Senate primary is expected to embolden like-minded challengers to GOP incumbents next year, reopening a politically perilous intraparty fissure that will sandwich President Donald Trump between anxious party leaders and his boiling base.

Moore, the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, has led in every public poll against Sen. Luther Strange, who was appointed to fill the seat of Attorney General Jeff Sessions in February by a scandal-plagued governor. Three new surveys all place Moore up by double digits, solidifying his position as the front-runner.

If the Establishment's tide of negative ads doesn't work...they have nothing else. This is their modus operandi to destroy challengers and stay in power, and protect their colleagues in power.

If all their donor money funded ads don't work, what are they gonna do???

Retire. That's what they're gonna do! They'll take their pensions and run. And good riddance!

Moore for Senate!!

It would be nice to see the emergence of a real conservative party to replace the failed GOP. The GOP is what it is, and is never going to change. Its a lost cause.

As long as we do’t nominate a Sharon Angle or Todd Akin. Remember the Buckley rule. Gotta be smart. Nevada is probably lost but we can win a lot this time around.

If Moore wins, McConnell will campaign for the Democrat.

I am not being facetious.

I see this as a “can’t lose” for Trump.

The President supported the incumbent. He supported the party’s pick. He supported McConnell’s guy. He made a sincere effort. If Strange were to win, the Establishment would owe Trump a debt.

But if Moore wins, Trump is actually in a position to say that the people have spoken, and they don’t want the Establishment. The people want what Trump is selling, even when Trump isn’t selling it.

A Moore win would send shudders through Washington and reverberate around the country for a host of reasons. For one, it would demonstrate that the anti-establishment movement that Trump stoked and rode to victory last year may no longer require the man himself.

"While Mr. President, we love you and Alabama supports you and Alabama voted for you, we don't need you coming to Alabama and telling Alabama who they need to vote for for the next U.S senator from this state," Matt Murphy, an Alabama radio host, said from the stage of Moore's Thursday evening rally.

One attendee at that event hoisted a blue placard that read: "Mr. President and Mr. V.P. I love you, but You are Wrong! AMERICA needs JUDGE MOORE."

Even the president has hedged on his endorsement in the race, openly acknowledging Friday that he "might've made a mistake" in coming out publicly for Strange, the decided underdog.

The Trump revolution is bigger than trump - as it should be.

We were told here over and over and over that Sharon Angle would win and salvation was at hand

You forget..... on Free Republic rational thinking is pretty much out the window, trumped by conservative radical puritanism

I think it is the anxious party leaders who are getting sandwiched like Wile E. Cayote between the anvil and the canyon floor.

And yet, if Roy Moore wins, it will provide evidence that your postulate is not on solid ground!

It would be nice to see the emergence of a real conservative party to replace the failed GOP. ..

The left did it - leftists booted out the Zel Miller's of the party, and turned into the progressive communist marxist party.

We need to do the same from the right, make inroads into the GOP, boot out the turtles and ryno, and bring in more Roy Moore's.

You are absolutely right. McConnell will do WHATEVER he has to to protect his precious senate. It’s been the bulwark against conservative victories for years (witness John McCain and Lisa Murkowski).

If the rabble-rousers get more footholds in the senate, he and his ilk are doomed. All they have are money for ads, that’s it. If they don’t work, then they’re out of bullets, and their only hope is to help the democrat.

Doesn't matter. Roy Moore is the epitome of your so-called slur "on Free Republic rational thinking is pretty much out the window, trumped by conservative radical puritanism" against Freepers.

Roy Moore is as Conservative of those you want to tar with the "conservative radical puritanism" or more so.
