I thought that meant they arrived in hell.
Reflect on the absurdity of the situation. Imagine for a moment that this is Gaul in ~50 B.C. A column of Gauls is retreating from an untenable position to link up with their comrades to fight another day. Caesar when informed of this column, despite having the means to annihilate them, allows them free passage. When fighting them later, he loses some of his best men. His excuse. “Well there were women and children in that column and .......”.
The moral of the story is that you cannot put brave, fighting men in absurd situations. These “rules of engagement” result in more death, prolonged unnecessary conflict and in many instances defeat as occurred in Vietnam. Either win or leave.
If this is the deal in Syria, imagine what’s going on with our troop “build-up” in Afghanistan.
