Dealing with Democrats? Protecting 'Dreamers'? That's just fine with these Trump supporters

Donald Trump’s tough talk on illegal immigration was a big part of the reason Dave Hagstrom and many others in this booming Phoenix suburb supported him for president. “Walls make good neighbors,” Hagstrom said.

So when the president moved this week to cut a deal — with Democrats no less — to block the expulsion of 800,000 immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children, was Hagstrom disappointed?

Not at all.

“If you were to deport them, where would they go?” Hagstrom, 60, a car-warranty manager, asked on his way to a Bible-study dinner at an upscale shopping mall. “To send them across the border would be inhumane almost. There’s no life for them there.”

Trump’s fiery rhetoric and promise to seal the U.S. border with Mexico attracted millions of supporters in last year’s election, many of them older white conservatives like the ones who repeatedly elected immigration hard-liner Joe Arpaio as sheriff here in Maricopa County.

But as Trump shifted this week to a softer approach on the young immigrants in legal limbo through no fault of their own, many of his most die-hard supporters moved right along with him — among them Arpaio, who was ousted in November by voters tired of his inflammatory approach.

Full Title: Dealing with Democrats? Protecting 'Dreamers'? Here in Arizona that's just fine with these Trump supporters

Looks like President Trump has positioned himself in a nice sweet spot..his base is sticking with him and he's appealing to Never Trumpers, moderates and even some Democrats (the small slice that's still sane).

This is something great to watch...all the veteran DC hacks said he wouldn't last...now they'll be standing in line to work with him.

“To send them across the border would be inhumane almost. There’s no life for them there.”

Why not? Is Mexico some third world hell-hole or something?

If so, why is it one of the world's top tourist destinations?

If it's such a third world hell-hole, why do they go back for Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays?

If it's such a hell-hole, why isn't it up to their politicians to improve it?

I Have no problem supporting a trump deal where these 800,000 ,are made eligible for citizenship if they jump through some hoops, have no criminal background, and are not allowed chain immigration benefits in exchange for the wall and the raise act. Particularly if they were brought here under the age of 10, remained here for 15 years and have no real ties to their prior country, Mexico. Maybe it’s the Christian in me, but I can live with that charitable compromise. I can also live with no deal and letting them face the constant threat of deportation and no voting rights. Go figure.

An example of so-called journalism created to fir the left’s narrative.

I know Trumpsters, myself included, that would not be happy with a cave on DACA.

Not getting hard on the illegals would mean war to a lot of us.

I wonder if Mr. Hagstrom has read Ann Coulter’s book, “Adios America”?

Don’t think that several hundred thousand of starving Venezuelans won’t take notice.

And I would like to resurrect the horror stories of hard working families on/near the border who’s life and property have been trashed or eliminated. Where’s the humanity in that?

All this means is that there are Trump voters who are in reality politically clueless & they just voted name recognition or for their ‘team’.

The most I’m willing to accept is giving a green card to these dreamers & letting them work. No citizenship, no access to gov’t benefits, & they can be deported promptly if they commit a crime. That’s it.

That’s about where I’m at. I’m not a hardliner on DACA and am okay with Trump trading it for leverage in other areas. I want the wall and I want chain migration ended. We can absorb and assimilate the 800,000 “dreamers”. But let’s get something out of the deal.

Let them stay. But, they cannot be citizens, they cannot vote, they cannot receive welfare or tax perks. Most would leave.

DACA survives only after the entire wall is fully funded, and applies only for existing trespassers. Then, full adherence to DACA’s less-friendly requirements and a clean-up of its considerable fraud and waste.

Just another in a long line of “final” amnesties. The transformation of America moves forward. I had hoped for better this time. I’m old enough to know better.

You know, or should know, it would never work out that way.

Why does it require so much remedial Alinsky education to drive home the essential points of this debate? Remove the factual policy pros & cons eg amnesty lite, chain migration, they're not children, etc, and try to focus on the optics and political implications.

It's a no win, lose-lose situation for Trump. Q: Why did Washington abandon NYC for the duration of the Revolution? Sometimes, you have to make decisions with respect to strategic defeat. DACA is one such beast. It doesn't help complaining - O laid a turd bomb, and only a fool would deny that it was very effective.

Sometimes credit has to be given to the enemy when due. DACA was one such initiative. It has terrible, horrible optics. It doesn't matter if the kids are 30 somethings. The media complex owns the distribution. They can award a (fake) photo framing some starving waif with a Pulitzer, and discuss it 24/7 for the next year leading to Nov 18.

Thankfully, Trump gets it and won't be lured into the trap. There's so many other things on the MAGA agenda to move forward without getting your pecker caught in the zipper.

And what we agree to give them happens in stage over a period of years.
And they must meet certain conditions or the while deal is null and void.

these illegal aliens have nobody to blame but themselves that they are still here illegally...

Sorry Nana, but the DACA recipients aren't illegal.

WHAT??????

I'm afraid it's true. They did NOT come here illegally. They came here on the basis of a US government program via presidential executive order. Barring a court striking it down (didn’t happen) or congress passing a law (didn’t happen), Obama’s executive order has the status of a temporary law. Trump has now RESCINDED that law, but that doesn’t change the fact that anyone who came here UNDER that law (i.e., before it was rescinded) is legal.

Sorry, but it's a fact. Once the law changes (under Trump), then they can be sent back. But don’t mix up rules changes with legality. Therefore, if they weren’t here “illegally” they aren’t getting “amnesty” which is forgiveness for breaking a law.

It is vitally important, that we NOT confuse the DACA people with “amnesty” because it devalues the term for the TRUE illegals who came here VIOLATING the rules.

No Mexico is a paradise because they have Mexican workers which are the best workers in the world is only by the generosity of Mexico that they help prop up our economy by letting us have some of there very best and brightest. Mexicans are the secret ingredient to a good economy. if it weren’t for Mexico I don’t know how I would do all the yard work, to complicated needs high tech equipment and needs someone lots of education and training, way beyond what I’m capable. I also like how in their spare time Mexicans help fight crime and cleanup liter on the side of the freeway. Is there anything Mexico can’t do? What do mean they abandon theit children on trains??
