Naples was expected to be Irma's bullseye, but first reports suggest the storm may not have caused the damage everyone expected.
On CNN this morning, Chris Cuomo interviewed Naples city manager Bill Moss. After the introduction, Cuomo said, "we didn't expect what happened yesterday, making history in the wrong kind of way, with the gusts we got, and then that surge."
Moss agreed that the storm initially was as fierce as expected. But he went on to say that the back side of the storm seemed to "peter out." Although it was still dark, Moss said that so far they have seen "very little structural damage," and that he doesn't think the flooding of structures will be "very severe."
Moss concluded that whereas getting power back could be a challenge, all in all, I think were going to be back to business very quickly.

If it hadn’t of hit Cuba like it did, it would have been much more powerful at the US. It basically destroyed the northern part of Cuba, including a rumored airport was destroyed. Most people have insurance on their home and family to stay with elsewhere.
I live in FL. I can tell you this storm was not overstated. It was dangerous, but thanks to God’s grace it didn’t follow the path they predicted. Had it moved 50 miles west, this would have been a disaster. Every county in the state experienced damage.
Florida homes, unlike Houston, are built to hurricane standards. People prepared. Unlike Houston, people evacuated.
There are at least 8M homes without power. This mayor is making his damage assessment in the dark. There will be massive flood damage in southern FL. Unless you live here, hold your judgement until the facts are revealed.
According to CNN the whole of Florida resembles Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the atomic bomb blasts. Florida has gotten smarter and imposed strict hurricane resistant building codes so that structural damage to large buildings can be expected to be minimal.
Yes, buildings in Florida, for the most part are good up to Cat 4.
The city manager apparently thinks that the future for Naples is brighter if he contradicts CNN’s Fake News hyperbole.
My Aunt called me from Broward County and she told me that she was under the impression from the media, as were many of her friends, that there would be state wide Cat 3 damage.
I thought that the media was very sloppy pointing out what limited areas were endangered by Cat 3 winds.
Yep - and if it had stayed off Cuba, it might have gone up the east coast of Florida at full strength and quintupled the damage.
