Naples was expected to be Irma's bullseye, but first reports suggest the storm may not have caused the damage everyone expected.
On CNN this morning, Chris Cuomo interviewed Naples city manager Bill Moss. After the introduction, Cuomo said, "we didn't expect what happened yesterday, making history in the wrong kind of way, with the gusts we got, and then that surge."
Moss agreed that the storm initially was as fierce as expected. But he went on to say that the back side of the storm seemed to "peter out." Although it was still dark, Moss said that so far they have seen "very little structural damage," and that he doesn't think the flooding of structures will be "very severe."
Moss concluded that whereas getting power back could be a challenge, “all in all, I think we’re going to be back to business very quickly.”

Compared to the nuclear destruction that was predicted Irma turned out to be much less.
Makes me wonder about people’s evac attitudes if there happens to be another high category storm in the next few years.
this thing was way overstated. It was misforecast in impact by hundreds of miles. It basically fizzled. If you left your home now your fighting to get back before the looters and you made a mistake. If you stayed— YOU LOOK SOP GOOD!!NEVER allow any government to tell to you leave your property unless you want to lose it.This was not a bad storm and was way “over blown” .
I think that better building codes are a big part of Florida’s lesser damage than expected.
The news effectively gets paid for ratings so is drama.
I watched storm hitting down there on snapchat map vids so had “normal” perspective.
Overblown, ratings-driven hype. It was much, much stronger in the Caribbean and it hit islands with very poor building standards. It arrived in Florida much weakened and the tv weather industry combined with the arse-covering, publicity-seeking politicians fueled hysteria.
It appears to have caused much less damage in Florida than Harvey caused in Texas, and even with Harvey, the percentage of people driven out of their homes compared to the population of metro Houston is super tiny, but to listen to the news, you would think half of Texas is uninhabitable.
Cuomo is the stupidest man on tv.
No wonder Rush calls him “Fredo.”

I came to Virginia from Naples, family there - they are all fine. Roofs intact. Water surge, yes, but nowhere near what was expected. One in old manufactured/modular home - it is fine.
Irma petered out soon after hitting land, back half of storm was nothing - southern half.

People who left Houston during Rita say they’ll never leave again. Few left for Harvey.
I did because I expected power failure and flooding. Plus, all my neighbors are armed.
Chris is an idiot. He should have interviewed the Mayor (politician) instead of the city manager (technician). No city manager is going to go on air and claim he did not have his city prepared. But every politician will go on air and claim his city needs massive aid to overcome the tragedy and hardship inflicted by such a catastrophic event that no amount of planning could have helped.

Lots of damage especially down South but they got a bit lucky with the track and lessening. Prayers for all affected by the hurricanes and a breath of relief that we didn’t get a follow-on to Katrina on the MS Gulf Coast.
So the power of the storm was greatly exaggerated by the press. I’m shocked! Shocked!
The storm was further east than expected so Southwest Florida got less of the dirty side of the storm.
The irony is, of all the cities in Florida, outside of the Keys, Jacksonville may get the worst of it.
Cuba took one for the team, had the storm stayed off the Cuban coast, it would have been much stronger when it came into Florida.
