Trump: 'Sad day' for North Korea if US takes military action
The Nikkei Asian Review ^ | September 8, 2017 | Reuters

WASHINGTON/BEIJING (Reuters) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he would prefer not to use military action against North Korea to counter its nuclear and missile threat but that if he did it would be a "very sad day" for the leadership in Pyongyang.

Trump again pointedly declined to rule out a U.S. military response following North Korea's sixth and most powerful nuclear test as his administration seeks increased economic sanctions, saying Pyongyang was "behaving badly and it's got to stop."

"Military action would certainly be an option. Is it inevitable? Nothing is inevitable," Trump said during a news conference.

I would prefer not going the route of the military," Trump said. "If we do use it on North Korea, it will be a very sad day for North Korea."

Even as Trump has insisted that now is not the time to talk to North Korea, senior members of his administration have made clear that the door to a diplomatic solution remains open, especially given the U.S. assessment that any pre-emptive strike would unleash massive North Korean retaliation.

While Trump talked tough on North Korea, China agreed on Thursday that the United Nations should take more action against Pyongyang but also kept pushing for dialogue to help resolve the standoff.....

The longer the wait as we redraw our red lines,we look more like a Paper Tiger to China and Russia. This is one of the hardest decisions that the POTUS/CIC has to make. In my estimation the only answer is War. All other options are a waste and weaken our status in the Pacific. Incidentally,Iran also watches. Nobody in their right mind wants War but what we face as enemies in the world are insane, diabolical and always plotting. We are being boxed in by enemies that are nuclear capable. I have a feeling the USA has very little will to first strike with a nuclear response.

Contrast a fourth-world nation that can't keep the lights on at night, with the label of being a massive threat to the free world.

He is openly developing nuclear weapons. He only has to get one... ONE... to land on target, and up to a million or so people can be killed. The two ends that you contrast are not incompatible, because this tyrant does not mind having entire hospitals dedicated to his health, while ignoring the millions of skeletons under his heel.

You are beyond foolish to imagine that NK's dictator-imposed poverty means that they are not a threat.

I agree entirely with your post, but it is frustrating to see so many who think a second Korean War will be short, easy and small loss of life. Did they learn NOTHING from history?

Throughout history every first-strike offensive has been accompanied by great optimism for a quick and easy victory. Just knock out the enemy’s major military power and they will roll over and play dead. In relatively modern times this has been witnessed by such actions as the Schlieffen Plan, the Mexican Revolution of 1910, Barbarossa, Pearl Harbor, Iraq, and a host of others. Even the most one-sided war I can think of, the Mexican War of 1846, lasted over two years because the Mexicans just wouldn’t quit. Enemies have this awful habit of not fully cooperating.

In 1950 there was euphoric optimism for a quick end, especially when the NK’s were pushed to the Yalu, but it didn’t really work out that way. In another war with NK, “We WON’T be home by Christmas”!

You can’t destroy a large city of 25 million with one salvo.

Have you not heard of nuclear weapons? They are kind of an important feature in this particular story.

North Korea doesn’t have nuclear-capable artillery and probably won’t for some time. That level of miniaturization is beyond them.

Is it beyond China? I don’t know, so I’m seriously asking. China will stay out of the fray for a while, but if it appears FatBoy is on the verge of being replaced by a reunited capitalist Korea, China will not be on our side.

China has a huge trade relationship with South Korea. Labels don’t always work.

This is how I see it too. Much has been made about this NK artillery capability and it's always prudent to never underestimate your enemy. However this assertion of NK apocalyptic artillery shouldn't be taken as an immutable fact. Yes they may be able to fire a strong couple of salvos but in Desert Storm Saddam's supposed fearsome artillery was never able to get off more then a round or two before counter battery tracking and targeting artillery systems and air assets found Iraqi batteries and took them out. The Iraqis quickly found out that to use their artillery was suicide. The North Korean military from what I've been researching is more like a badly out of tune orchestra playing a Beethoven sonata and a rickety old piano.

They still have T-34 tanks and MiG-15 fighter planes and biplane transports. Their submarines are mostly ancient Soviet Romeo class boats.

I agree, which is why if you roll back the videotape, you'll see that I said:

I don't doubt that NK poses some danger. I think 'lil Kim shows signs of inbreeding (i.e., he may be crazy), and it's a situation worth monitoring.

What I consider unlikely - but still plausible - is that he's got a nuke. Unlikely = less than 50% probability. Maybe it's a 40% probability. But it's not 90%.

Indeed, if he was in fact openly-developing a nuke, then where are the pictures? Where is the evidence? All we have are about five seismic disturbances and claims of successful nuclear tests from NK (yes, the same trustworthy source that claimed the late Kim Jong Il made 11 hole-in-ones).

Going further, should I believe he has a nuke because CNN tells me, or because some globalist shill tells me we have no choice to but to bomb him before he bombs us or Seoul, or because some DeepStater who knew some guy who knew some guy who told a reporter that he's got a nuke?

Indeed, only a few months ago Sean Spicer said "I think there is no evidence that North Korea has that capability at this time."

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that he has a nuke. What is our strategy? Send thousands of Americans to die for the security of the Korean peninsula (even his lousy missile tests can't get close to the US)? That was what Hillary would have done, for less than noble reasons. In fact, Bannon recently stated:

There's no military solution, forget it. Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that 10 million people in Seoul [South Korea] don't die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don't know what you're talking about, there's no military solution here, they got us.

Let me be clear. The man-child KJU threatened the United States. He's doing something over there, because there have been seismic disturbances. We should keep an eye or two on him. But all of this doesn't ipso facto mean he's got a nuke, and can hit the US, and that we have no choice but go to war.

I say give Psyops a chance. (In fact, Bannon's comment may have been just a taste of that.) It may not satiate the warmonger in us, but it may be effective.

You can’t think of a more lopsided war that was resolved faster. One around 2003 maybe?

_____________________________________________________

We can invade with all the “shock and awe” in the world, remove dictators like Saddam, and pronounce victory. A few years later we can make a “surge” and declare victory again, but, truth is, wars in the Middle East never end. We finally pull out most of our troops, but nothing is resolved. People are still killing each other there.

The only time a war is “resolved” is when there is a recognized victory of one side over the other, and hostilities cease. We haven’t seen one of those in a while, other than a few little brushfires. The Falklands was resolved, Iraq was not.

They would last about 45 minutes to an hour at most. Fat Boy wants nukes so he can preserve the family dynasty. He saw what happened to Saddam and Kaddafhi in Libiya. They were trying to get nukes and we took them out.
