Trump overrules GOP with deal on spending, debt, Harvey aid

President Donald Trump briskly overruled congressional Republicans and his own treasury secretary Wednesday to cut a deal with Democrats to keep the government operating and raise America's debt limit. The immediate goal was ensuring money for hurricane relief, but in the process the president brazenly rolled his own party's leaders.

...brushing aside the urgings of GOP leaders and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for a much longer extension to the debt limit. Republicans want that longer allowance to avoid having to take another vote on the politically toxic issue before the 2018 congressional elections.

The session painted a vivid portrait of discord at the highest ranks of the Republican Party. After an angry August that Trump spent lobbing attacks at fellow Republicans, specifically targeting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell...

At first, in Wednesday's Oval Office meeting, the Republicans lobbied for an 18-month debt ceiling extension, then 12 months and then six, but Trump waved them off. As Mnuchin continued to press an economic argument in favor of a longer-term deal, Trump tired of it and cut him off mid-sentence. ...

Aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters, "We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer." He didn't mention Republicans McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also had been present...

"I think the deal will be very good," Trump added.

Barely an hour earlier, Ryan had slammed the Democrats' demand for a three-month extension as "ridiculous and disgraceful." He issued no public statement on the final deal...

The deal struck Wednesday at the White House promises to speed the $7.9 billion Hurricane Harvey aid bill, which passed the House overwhelmingly Wednesday...The debt ceiling and government funding extensions will be attached.

“Aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters, “We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.” “

Is this the start of the Arnold 2.0 administration?

Did Trump not show yesterday that the GOP does not have all the power?
He did indeed. Pressure will grow for McConnell because the GOP wants
that power, and all that comes with it. DC is all about power.
Otherwise Trump will continue to work around the GOP RINO’s.

How does the POTUS overrule Congress?

Did President Trump say he had a Pen and a Phone?

He kicked the whining do nothing Republicans in the A$$.

They write the Legislation and send it to the President’s desk to be signed. They are the Majority Party, right?

The POTUS doesn’t get a Vote, all he can do is prod them to get something done.

This is a good move. The Republicans wanted to be able to talk out of both sides of their mouths until after the midterms. They want to extend the debt ceiling until after that. Trump said "screw you" you haven't done one thing for me yet. So the Dems were MORE than happy to give the Republicans leadership only 3 months and then have to bring it up as an issue AGAIN.

IF Trump keeps doing stuff like this then the Republicans will realize that they're going to be spending MUCH more money to hold on to their power then they would have otherwise.

There is no doubt that GOP has done that. But you seem to think that means Trump should just work with the Dems...who give an even bigger FU to the republican base.

They are the leaders of the opposition party. Some consensus is required given that this is not a dictatorship like Venezuela.

I “seem to think” he just works with the Dems? You know Never Trumper the Swamp, the Dems, and the Establishment Repubs are working for the same team. They need an attitude adjustment. So where is Trump’s budget, tax cuts, and funding for the wall?

You don’t fool anyone with your total anti-Trumping.

Post #87 explains it pretty good.

So work with the DEMs who say FU to the base until the Republicans learn a lesson because they say FU to the base.

Yeah, lets see how that works out.

“So you believe he should just work with the Dems who give an even bigger FU to the republican base so that GOP will remember the Republican base???”

I believe your statement is hysterical hogwash.

I also believe President Trump using the RATs in this instance is warranted. His own party in Congress refuses to pass his agenda. When you add the fact the GOP didn’t get the 18 month CR they wanted (the bastards), & I can’t help but applaud President Trump’s brilliance.

President Trump has clearly signaled to the GOP they better get on board with his agenda or he will make them irrelevant. This will open the door to more GOPe turds being primaried in 2018, IMO.

I support President Trump’s decision 100%.
