Trump overrules GOP with deal on spending, debt, Harvey aid
abc ^ | Sep 7, 2017, 12:30 AM ET | Erica Werner

President Donald Trump briskly overruled congressional Republicans and his own treasury secretary Wednesday to cut a deal with Democrats to keep the government operating and raise America's debt limit. The immediate goal was ensuring money for hurricane relief, but in the process the president brazenly rolled his own party's leaders.

...brushing aside the urgings of GOP leaders and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for a much longer extension to the debt limit. Republicans want that longer allowance to avoid having to take another vote on the politically toxic issue before the 2018 congressional elections.

The session painted a vivid portrait of discord at the highest ranks of the Republican Party. After an angry August that Trump spent lobbing attacks at fellow Republicans, specifically targeting Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell...

At first, in Wednesday's Oval Office meeting, the Republicans lobbied for an 18-month debt ceiling extension, then 12 months and then six, but Trump waved them off. As Mnuchin continued to press an economic argument in favor of a longer-term deal, Trump tired of it and cut him off mid-sentence. ...

Aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters, "We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer." He didn't mention Republicans McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also had been present...

"I think the deal will be very good," Trump added.

Barely an hour earlier, Ryan had slammed the Democrats' demand for a three-month extension as "ridiculous and disgraceful." He issued no public statement on the final deal...

The deal struck Wednesday at the White House promises to speed the $7.9 billion Hurricane Harvey aid bill, which passed the House overwhelmingly Wednesday...The debt ceiling and government funding extensions will be attached.

The GOP are too busy making political calculations than to do anything constructive (e.g., pass a budget; protect our borders); calculations which have absolutely, positively nothing to do with principles, promises, honor, integrity, defense of the Constitution, etc., etc.

No, the only thing that matters in these GOP political calculations -- the thing -- is will it help them get re-elected.

He will continue the populist rants and then underdeliver on the big rants like the wall and trade agreements. But he continues to quietly roll back Obama rules and make outstanding judiciary picks.

I only ever expected or hoped for solid court picks and immigration sanity. We have the former and even without the wall the later is happening.

Overall I am quite pleased. Oh, foreign policy has been a bonus.

The GOP in the 80s never attacked Reagan....never. And do your own research, there were plenty of instances of Reagan and O’Neill, negotiating, meeting, and working out deals. Boll Weevil democrats were also in the mix.

You don’t recall correctly. Early in the campaign maybe. But after GOPe Bush was included, the Repubs were very happy with Reagan.
And after the inauguration, there was no republican out there anywhere who disliked Reagan.

Unless of course, you can provide an example so I can compare.

A simple Internet search can find plenty of Reagan and Chubby O’Neil being buddies. Oh the kissy face:

I suppose we have to resign to the fact that the GOP majority is worthless as having a legislative advantage. Schumer and Pelosi “Rick Rolled” Ryan and McConell.

The RATs run congress because Ryan and McConnell have allowed
them to run congress.
The 60 vote rule is the biggest obstacle.
We will see if McConnell changes that rule
or continues to be run over by the RATs.

Yes, Trump needs to ask for new leadership. He is leader of the party and needs to step up.

No, it’s Ryan and the DU GrOPe having to again explain 90 days later why they want to raise the Debt ceiling without passing a real budget/tax cuts. It should be every 90 days from now on for the Swamp has to explain itself - BS song and dance.

He won’t change it because that rule makes a handful of GOPe’rs all powerful. What happens to McConnel, MCain, Linsey, et. al., if they are just part of a simple majority?

He changed it for SC picks because that was en existential threat to the GOPs very existence.

First off there is barely a GOP representation in congress. What there really is are moderate democrats (DIRCs -democrats in republican clothing) and liberal democrats. The moderate democrats were continuing to throw a hissy fit because Trump dared to steal their nomination and win with it. Thus, they proceeded to glad hand him and (McStupid McCainlike) outright backstab him.

Trump sent a message to the moderate wing. This is Trump’s way of saying “fine, you want to act like a non-entity, I will treat you as one.”

As much as I detest Pelosi and Reid, I am developing an even greater dislike for the DIRCS who lie to their constituency.

I want an example where Reagan basically said FU to the GOP and caved to the Dems. talking with a majority leader and trying to find a resolution is not what Trump did here.

Give me one precise example.

I am pretty sure you are wrong...and yes I will look today...because I remember over and over and over during the Trump campaign how people compared him to Reagan and how gop hated Reagan when he was first in office.

And yes, there were even posts here about it.
