Facebook says likely Russian-based operation spent money on ads on issues

Facebook Inc said on Wednesday it had found that an influence operation likely based in Russia spent $100,000 on ads promoting divisive social and political messages in a two-year-period through May.

The ads spread polarizing views on topics including immigration, race and gay rights, instead of backing a particular political candidate, it said.

As recently as June, it told journalists that it had not found any evidence to date of Russian operatives buying election-related ads on its platform.

A Facebook employee said Wednesday that there were unspecified connections between the divisive ads and a well-known Russian “troll factory” in St. Petersburg that publishes comments on social media.

Beyond the issue ads, Facebook said it uncovered $50,000 more in overtly political advertising that might have a link to Russia. Some of those ads were bought using the Russian language, even though they were displayed to users in English.

Wait—you mean Facebook takes money from shady people to run divisive political ads? Wow. Knock me over with a feather.

“found that an influence operation likely based in Russia spent $100,000 on ads promoting divisive social and political messages in a two-year-period”

50k a year!!

Im more worried about Google, Apple, and Amazon spending 12 million in the first quarter of 2017 when its not even an election year. Or Lockheed spending 20 million a year. Or the classified billions spent by the CIA and State depts on propaganda aimed at the American people.

But yes, ok, Facebook that spends millions on lobbying and god knows how much on shaping opinion found that the Russians spent 50k a year.

Laughable.

Let's say it's 100% true. The Russians spent money on ads.

So?

I’m pretty sure Democrats have spent a pretty penny on “divisive” ads/posts and stuff on Facebook too. They seem to have an army of (probably paid) trolls all posting the exact same talking points simultaneously whenever there’s some “issue” like Melania wearing heels to the helicopter pad or something.

Notice they don’t tell us what the ads said? I bet they support liberal wedge issues.

Not at all fake. We have more than a few Russia trolls right here. And they’ve been here for years doing what they do. Have no idea why they’re still here. I would have booted their phony butts off a long time ago.

Both the Russians and G.Soros seek to undermine the US. Interestingly, it was the Soros-supported democrats who were actually in bed with the Russians. It was the O admin who handed them on a silver platter everything they sought on missile defense and nukes, including the Iran nuke deal that Putin loves so much. It was Hillary who gave the Russians control of roughly 20% of our uranium production. It was O who allowed Russia to transfer some of that uranium to Iran.

Yeah, and I’m sure they sent the money back with a sternly worded letter saying, “We don’t accept ads like this”.
