Washington, D.C. (WTHR) - Two years after WTHR exposed the Internal Revenue Service ignoring millions of cases of identity theft, the federal agency’s own inspector general says the problem is even larger than expected – and the IRS is unwilling to take steps to protect hundreds of thousands of victims.
The U.S. Treasury’s Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) reviewed millions of tax returns filed by undocumented workers in 2015. The inspector general released a formal audit report this summer showing those tax returns include an estimated 1.5 million cases of identity theft. (That’s for a single year reviewed.)
After WTHR’s reporting, the IRS pledged to better identify victims, to place a warning on their accounts and to notify them of suspected identity theft. But the TIGTA audit reveals that did not happen in hundreds of thousands of cases.
According to the inspector general’s review, more than 830,000 victims were not identified even though identity thieves electronically filed tax returns with evidence that they used the victims’ Social Security Numbers to gain employment.

I had the same experience only I was a pregnant housewife and they made me produce documentation to show I was in Oregon and not California. They wanted receipts with dates, which I didn’t have because hubby gave me a cash allowance to run the household. Had to get them a letter from my ob/gyn.

Here is what I fail to understand: Each individual SS# should consist of a single account. That account should be in one name, the name in which it was originated. If someone else uses that number any income reported is credited to that account, and the benefits accrued based on that income are payable to the individual originally named on the account. So, how am I harmed? Use my number, work a lot and multiply my retirement benefit, please!
Where am I going wrong? A reply from someone who actually works for the SS system would be best! Other opinions will be considered.

Congress funds the operation and the existence of the IRS. Congress created the flipping IRS. IF Congress had a mind and spine they would be demanding the IRS to protect SS numbers...Now, with the IRS still going over Trump's taxes, somebody is just awaiting, kind of like you, for Trump to step over their obsessive insane mind. There was NOTHING done to the IRS long before Trump won the election... Congress which you never ever have any issue with, ignored the 'lawbreaking' of going after 'conservative' groups.
What you miserably fail to recognize, those Trump hires work for US, and they sure as .ell, have accomplished more in their life's journey, than the go along to get along Republican controlled Congress.
