Opinion: The abandonment of a president [cheering it on]
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 8/27/17 | Jay Bookman

Posted on 08/27/2017 11:12:26 AM PDT by madprof98

This is pretty extraordinary, as the startled reaction from Chris Wallace demonstrates.

In an interview aired Sunday morning on Fox, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson draws a sharp distinction between the values of the American people and the American government on one hand, and the values expressed by his boss, President Trump, on the other hand.

***

“This administration can and must do better in consistently and unequivocally condemning these groups and do everything we can to heal the deep divisions that exist in our communities,” Cohn said, acknowledging the difficulty it has caused for him and others at top levels in the Trump administration. “This is a personal issue for each of us. We are all grappling with it. This takes time to grapple with.”

***

Mattis, Cohn and Tillerson were people of accomplishment and reputation before they joined the Trump administration, and they hope to leave it the same way. They also don’t come out of the political world; they have never run for office and never will, so they have no need to try to placate the Trump base. And if the price of their candor is Trump’s disfavor, they are willing to pay that price.

It really is all falling apart.

Bookman is gleeful, of course, but I think what he is seeing is real.

I’d be surprised if Cohn is still there in six months. His hyperventilating about “white supremacists” and “Neo-Nazis” tells me that he is completely disconnected from the American people and has no clue about the challenges that 99% of Americans face on a daily basis. And even if the same could be said about most political figures these days, most of them are smart enough to avoid demonstrating it by making such politically tone-deaf statements.

Tillerson’s comments were vague.

The only causal link for concluding things are falling apart is you want them to fall apart.

The vast majority of Americans reject tearing down statues... that INCLUDES OVER 40+% of people in the black community and Hispanic communities.

Maybe Mr. Cohn needs to check his prejudice against traditional Americans... of ALL colors.

Great, deep-staters. Nazis (soclialists, racists) are bad. Americans know that and never disagreed. Antifa (anarchists, communists) and BLM (anti-police, race war agitators) are somehow better? Simply for hating Nazis???

Yeah why is a communist party even legal in America if confederate statues have to come down?

And why isn’t someone crying about MLK, who beat the #### out of prostitutes.

At this point if you don’t see that made up narratives are not going to sway Trump supporters, then you’ll probably waste a significant amount of time and effort over the next several years.

Heal the deep divisions?! How about tell the communist that there is a U.S. Constitution that applies to everyone. And that Constitution will be defended by the Federal Government for every group no matter what. Bill of Rights; Freedom of Speech. Violence will be arrested and prosecuted.

I don’t think so. If anything, this is just making people regard him as their one salvation from the left. I didn’t even like him, although I voted for him, and I think he’s made mistakes that have fed them but he is also facing an unprecedented level of hostility and attacks.

Still, he’s doing well and I honestly think the only thing that would bring him down is kowtowing to these people, be they Dems or GOP.

Trump has surrounded himself with the most brilliant, diverse, and accomplished advisors and Cabinet since Reagan. But unlike Reagan’s Cabinet, they are businessmen and not ideologues. None have ever run for office or had any plans to do so, there were chosen because of their qualifications not their ideological purity. If some have opinions of their own, well, it’s not like George Schultz and Caspar Weinberger never disagreed.

Too many people are overwrought because they fear the worst when all that’s going on is the normal ins and outs of an adminstration that is making great progress on virtually every front. The one place where Trump may not be winning is in the Mainstreat Media. And who cares? He didn’t need them to win and he doesn’t need them to MAGA.

President Trump needs to take these wandering souls into the woodshed for a frank discussion about their future employment.

100% behind this President, but he made some really poor choices in building his team. Tillerson still brings a lot to the table that I like, and his comments were at worst bland today, but his team needs to formulate better messaging that clearly supports this president and backs his mission.

“...the Democratic Party is increasingly becoming hostage to its activist, progressive, identity politics-driven base, which obsesses over issues not relevant to the vast majority of the American people but that play well on Twitter and MSNBC.” (from link below)

He’s right ... slowly the democrat party is becoming the party of ‘liberal elites’... and ONLY liberal elites.

Even their minority base is starting to leave them... 40%+ have left them over the statue issue... We’re watching the slow the death of the democrat party.

What I see is monuments and statues coming down more and more and more and for more and more stupid reasons.

I dont know if these issues will affect the local vote.

I already emailed deblasio and told him he wont get ONE Italian vote if he takes down the Columbus statue.

He probably doesn’t get many anyway though.
