Suit claims California tosses thousands of ballots every election

California wrongly disqualifies tens of thousands of mailed-in ballots in each election because officials decide the voter’s signature on the ballot envelope doesn’t match earlier submissions, the American Civil Liberties Union said in a lawsuit Thursday.

More than half of California’s voters cast their ballots by mail. The ACLU is challenging a law that allows county election officials to refuse to count a ballot if they decide the signature on the envelope is different from the voter’s signature on the registration form or other documents on file. The law does not require county registrars to notify voters or give them a chance to verify their identity.

A 29-county study after the 2016 election estimated that as many as 45,000 ballots were disqualified statewide because of alleged signature mismatches, the ACLU said. It said rejection rates were nearly 40 percent higher for Asian Americans than for the rest of the population, and nearly twice as high for Latinos.

I've voted/lived in the Bay Area and Orange County. Going to the polls was like a trip to the United Nations. Even voter ID would not stop the potential fraud.

I suspect this 29-county study is the tip of the iceberg.

I suppose ballots are disqualified if the signature on the envelope indicates a name that is on the list of Registered Republicans.

This is an effort to facilitate more fraud, not less! Signature verification is a way of proving a mailed ballot is not from some boiler room operation.

Mail in voting and early vote are the superhighways of voter fraud. There are so many ways to interfere with the votes it’s mind boggling.

The best system. On voting day you show up at your local poll, show your ID, sign the register, cast your voter on a paper ballot, and dip your finger in ink. if you won’t/can’t do that, to bad.

Which counties? Of course, those disqualified are never made aware of the disqualification.

Alfred Neuman is not Alfred E. Neuman - that vote is out. Oops Angelo name - he is out. Oops address from a wealthy area - he’s out. Just Wow.

I fully believe this to be true.
Party affiliation has also been suspected as a factor.

S.F. elections department ‘finds’ eight ballot boxes floating in the San Francisco Bay. The city announced also ‘finding’ at least 240 additional ballots that were not counted in the election on Nov. 6th.

we should not allow mail in ballots at all because you cant trust the security on the ballot...we should only have voting on the day of the election and the only absentee ballot that should be allowed should be for government officials over seas and the military. those ballots should never be mailed in but collected at the embassies and military outposts in a secure manor.

I personally think about 20 percent of the voting in this country is fraudulent.

Notice of a rejected ballot should be required. I suspect some would be notified of a ballot they didn’t submit. And some ballots may be rejected due to a change in handwriting - perhaps due to age or disability.

Yep. Agreed.

Only exception might be for ACTIVE, DEPLOYED military.

If you might get killed protecting America, you shouldn’t have to worry that your vote won’t be accurately counted.

Wait a minute, CA government is allegedly so concerned about voter fraud they’re going to do handwriting analysis on voter ballot envelopes? Yet they oppose common sense measures like requiring photo ID to vote?

This reeks like a week old homicide scene.

The military can set up polling places for our GIs just like they do for countries we’ve been “nation building” in.

Yes, what is the rejection rate from APO/FPOs? That should be mentioned.
