A federal court in Texas on Wednesday struck down the state's controversial voter identification law, granting an injunction that bars state officials from enforcing the measure.
U.S. District Judge Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos ruled that the law was enacted with the intent to discriminate against black and Hispanic voters, saying that it violates the Voting Rights Act.
Texas state lawmakers passed a watered down version of the voter ID law this summer. The judge issued an injunction barring enforcement of that measure as well.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said after the ruling Wednesday that he will appeal the ruling, arguing that state lawmakers sufficiently changed the law to remove any discriminatory features.
"The U.S. Department of Justice is satisfied that the amended voter ID law has no discriminatory purpose or effect," he said in a statement. "Safeguarding the integrity of elections in Texas is essential to preserving our democracy. The 5th Circuit should reverse the entirety of the district courts ruling.
Texas AG Paxton's full statement:
Attorney General Ken Paxton today promised to appeal a federal court decision granting a permanent injunction against Texas voter ID law (Senate Bill 14). Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos also issued an injunction against Senate Bill 5, the revised voter ID law passed during the recent regular session of the Legislature to comply with the 5th Circuits prior ruling.
Todays ruling is outrageous. Senate Bill 5 was passed by the peoples representatives and includes all the changes to the Texas voter ID law requested by the 5th Circuit, Attorney General Paxton said. The U.S. Department of Justice is satisfied that the amended voter ID law has no discriminatory purpose or effect. Safeguarding the integrity of elections in Texas is essential to preserving our democracy. The 5th Circuit should reverse the entirety of the district courts ruling.
In a court filing earlier this month, the Department of Justice (DOJ) asked Judge Ramos to end efforts to overturn Senate Bill 5, noting that the law eradicates any discriminatory effect or intent and expands voter identification options when it takes effect January 1. Texas voter ID law both guarantees to Texas voters the opportunity to cast an in-person ballot and protects the integrity of Texas elections, the DOJ told Judge Ramos.
Last year, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals remanded the case to Judge Ramos to assess the impact of any future legislative action, like Senate Bill 5.

Federal District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos is an Obama appointee.
What kind of name is Gonzalez Ramos anyway? Lithuanian? Swedish? Scotch-Irish?
Other states have voter I.D. laws. It must be constitutional.
I bought concert tickets recently. The tickets say, “Picture ID needed for admission.” (I need to get my 15-year-old son a state ID card.)
I guess the Oppressed never go to concerts.

Appointed by Obama and approved by Cheap Labor Express Republicans.
U.S. District Judge Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos is a total horses behind.
We have had picture ID for voting since I started voting in the ‘70’s here in Virginia.
Lunacy reigns.
It was declared unconstitutional in NC.
Some of these lame-o judges need to be struck down.
“U.S. District Judge Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos ruled that the law was enacted with the intent to discriminate against black and Hispanic voters...”
IOW - a federal judge apparently believes that black & brown folk are not sufficiently intelligent enough to obtain adequate ID.
That’s racis!

Obama appointee. Born in 1965, you’ll be hearing from her for a long time.
Texas and any other state that has its voter ID laws rejected by a federal court should just ignore the ruling.
As usual, liberal judges and law trump everything...
Sick of this.
When do we fight back? When do we play the same dirty games? No, we just take it, take it, take it...
Ramos was the only candidate also supported by Republican Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison
and John Cornyn.[4] On January 26, 2011, President Barack Obama nominated Ramos to replace
Judge Hayden Head.[4] The United States Senate confirmed Ramos by unanimous consent on
August 2, 2011.[6] She received her commission on August 4, 2011.[3]
So.... what a judge imagines the legislature’s “intent” was, versus constitutional and statutory principles?
“”Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos ruled that the law was enacted with the intent to discriminate against black and Hispanic voters””
Going on the same basis courts/judges have overruled some of Trump’s orders because they HEARD him say something different on the campaign trail. This judge heard someone at a cocktail party say they wanted to discriminate against black and Hispanic voters and by golly he wasn’t going to let them get away with it!
If Voter I.D. laws are inherently racist, all I.D. laws are racist.
Prove you live in that house ... racist.
Prove that’s your money you are taking out of the bank ... racist.
Prove that is your car you are taking ... racist.
