Rand Paul Opposes Troop Surge: ‘Mission in Afghanistan Has Lost Its Purpose
Breitbart ^ | August 21, 2017 | Ben Kew

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) released a statement on Monday opposing any plan to add additional troops to the ground mission in Afghanistan, hours before President Donald Trump addresses the nation about his plans for the region.

“The mission in Afghanistan has lost its purpose, and I think it is a terrible idea to send any more troops into that war,” Paul said in a statement.

We’re in Iraq AGAIN...because that AH Obama pulled all our troops out. We CANNOT let ISIS and the Taliban and alqueda take over the world. We have to close doors.

There was never a good purpose to ground troops in Afghanistan.

No one has ever tamed it and no one ever will.

30 days of daily B-52 raids was all the effort it was worth.

“Leave the country and let them kill each other.”

They also tend to try and kill us. When left to their own devices.

Once again I find myself agreeing with Senator Paul. All too often, he appears to be the only person in Washington DC who ever bothered reading the Constitution.

The Taliban already control 2/3 of Afghanistan. This is their country. They are the tribal leaders of their areas. Take them out and some other tribal leader will emerge, maybe by a different name but probably the same principles, extremely conservative Islam.

There never was a mission in Afghanistan except to take out OBL and this is accomplished. We cannot kill everyone in the whole country because we don’t like how they organize themselves.

Afghanistan has always been a collection of tribal fiefdoms, not a central government as we know it. We can’t force our ideas of nationhood (not to mention democracy etc) on them. It is a fools errand

How many more of our people have to die or be maimed for life fighting their tribal and religious battles for them?

Exactly. Sending U.S. troops to occupy Afghanistan is like giving iPhones to aboriginal tribes in South America.

That’s why we need to keep them out and be very vigilant about our borders.

We cannot colonize all Muslim countries.
For one thing they outnumber us by a huge amount.
Muslims are almost 25% of the word’s population.
We are 5%.
Do we really want to spend all of our resources over there babysitting them and trying to keep them from killing each other?

When Rand Paul is good on the issues, he's very, very good. When he's wrong, he's awful.

President Trump described a strategy that sounds like what he did with ISIS in Syria and Iraq. It has their effectiveness really diminished and local governments regaining control. He is abandoning nation building and regime change. These are things the very, very good Rand Paul usually supports.

I'm so sick of almost everyone in the US Senate. Maybe it's something in the air or water in that building. They're all despotic want to bees who have this horrific self-important view of how the world should run.

I try to like Rand Paul, but he always take a completely contrary position to virtually every issue. Still, he’s better than his gadfly father.
