Welding helmets have various shade of protection so, it depends. I do not know the shade you would need.
I’m in Washington State just out on the porch. I am not going to look at it but, the dogs are barkng a bit the birds are making evening sounds and there is confused a rooster.
The rooster is often confused but, not normally at this time of day.

And after it passed

They began morning calls

I think you have to have 14 or above for the welding helmet...ours did not have a rating...

I read that the number listed is actually only for the darkness of the shield, not the ability to block out dangerous rays...

so we used ours, rating unknown, but we also put on regular sunglasses and only sneaked a peak...

the homemade eclipse box did not seem to really work...
