Replacing the Republican Party
The Washington Times ^ | August 20, 2017 | Angelo M. Codevilla

Having refused to repeal Obamacare, the Republican Party is dead, as was the Whig Party in 1854 after it colluded in the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act which opened these territories to slavery.

Republican majorities in both Houses of Congress as well as control of legislatures and governorships in 26 states veil the fact that, in 2017, there are no longer reasons to vote Republican any more than there were to vote Whig after 1854.

The Republican Party’s successes in recent electoral cycles were due to the American people’s desire not to be governed by a ruling class, headed by the Democratic Party, which is restricting, insulting and impoverishing the country. Republican voters were hopeful but doubtful. In the 2016 Republican primaries the overwhelming majority of votes went to candidates least tied to the party establishment.

In 1854, the Whig Party finished itself off because its support of Kansas-Nebraska was the last in a long line of acquiescences to the Democratic Party’s agenda regarding slavery and expansion. Obamacare is a principal part of what Democratic rule imposed on America. By embracing it in 2017, the Republican Party removed any prospect that it might serve as an alternative to Democratic rule.

I personally disagree wholeheartedly with the author. Not that the Republican Party needs to be replaced, but that splitting off and forming a new party is the answer.

One glaring difference between the 1850s and now is that back then, the two parties were nowhere near as polarized as they are today. Heck, socialism didn't even exist yet. If a third party formed and ran a candidate in 2020, do you honestly believe that everyone who makes up the Democrat base wouldn't continue to vote Democrat? All that would happen is that the Republican ticket would be split and the election would be handed to the Democrats on a silver platter. The only way to successfully replace the Republican party now is to first end the intricate system of laws that is the two-party system.

Support loosening ballot access laws and laws about nominations in your state and every other.

It would be good for the country if the two major parties both imploded.

The Republicans were formed to replace the Whigs because the Whigs would not take a stand on the key issues of the day. They did such a good job of replacing the Whigs that they’ve become the Whigs.

What prevents President Trump from creating a new party and inviting all of his supporters to join? What would that do to the balance of power and would a new party be able to replace GOP senators and representative able to push through the President’s agenda? Can it be done in time?

I think we just need to change the Republican party from the inside to make it into what it was originally meant to be.

There is nothing to left to change. A party that validates leftist violence on its own base is rotten to it’s core. There is nothing left to salvage, IMO.

..... Yup .... The party that get’s the electoral votes will always be the victor ... the other party or parties will come in second and third. The others may hold a few seats but the main party who is the victor will hold the majority. So talk about a third party to add to the other hundreds of third parties out their will only serve to split the dysfunctional conservative vote guaranteeing the solidly unified Democrat Party to maintain its rule and policies in this country.

A "New Party" would face the same corruption that the old parties face and would be sucked in by it. Without radical-one term- term limits the value of congressmen to the folks with the money is way too high. One term congressmen would be worth much less because they would only be short term rentals instead of long term leases.

Returning the selection of senators to state legislatures would not stop the corruption of senators but legislatures are much more apt to remove senators who do not have the States' interests as their agendae than will voters who are much more swayable by expensive campaigns.

cannot be done with the leadership on the take, and no term limits. There will be no term limits,as they must vote for it and it isn’t going to happen. Trump should start a Constitutionalist Party as he can probably pull 40% of repukes, and 10-20% of dims for a win.

That could happen Miraculous things can. But it’s so corrupt, the party bosses control who runs for office and it’s their guys. The Gop is terrible.

Republicans in congress and in statehouses across the land are sitting idle, cowering in their closets while liberals run wild. They stalled the healthcare repeal simply by talking a lot. The republicans didn't show up.

Their people took to the streets to burn and destroy property. The republicans were virtually silent.

They've killed cops from coast to coast. The best the republicans do is issue their standard statement calling for civility and prayers for the family.

They're tearing down monuments and demanding the destruction of Mt. Rushmore. Republicans have nothing to say.

Evidence has been shared to show that teh runaway car in Charlottesville was driven by a schizoid kid after people began hitting it with clubs. But no republican has anything to say to counter the media lies.

ONE MAN, DONALD TRUMP HAS SPOKEN THE TRUTH. And no one is behind him but Mike Pence.

IMO, he is the only person who could accomplish that feat. Hope he does it.

As long as those bums get elected by the popular votes of their respective districts there will be no changes. The vast majority of Repugnant voters are low information and have no idea what their representatives do, or don’t do.
