I’m not saying that it is a good thing, but just to keep heads calm, as a student nurse in the 1960’s I had my hands and arms up to the elbows in vats of formaldehyde. That is where our cats under routine ‘autopsy’ were stored while we were not actively dissecting them. No such thing as gloves on our hands. Gloves were few and far between...mostly used only in operating rooms. I’m 74 years old now. No ill effects. A long and very healthy life. True, I wouldn’t want it smelling up my house. But heck, we used to play with mercury, too. Rolling it in balls around our school desks. The only thing that scares me is what wimps Americans have become.

We’re all going to die anyway, so why not get a head start on the embalming process?

Sounds like a variation on the urea formaldehyde foam insulation issue of the 1980’s. Spraying the foam into wall cavities often resulted in an incomplete mix of the two-part foam resin and hardener which left behind unreacted formaldehyde. Wonder if this was a manufacturing defect of these engineered joists.

“Aldehides” are aromatic hydrocarbons with copper.

They do not cause copper to corrode.

What they do is cause your cells to cease dividing, which will lead to death as your organs eventually fail.

Your body ceases to repair itself.

Had you remained in that environment, you would not have made it to 74.

The very purpose of formaldehyde is to cause life to cease.

So they had a swimming pool at the facilities? Or was there a beach nearby?

I would know just driving in the driveway or entering the front door of a new home if there were formaldehyde fumes...I’d depart pretty darn fast and I sure as heck wouldn’t become one of their buyers!

The problem was sulfur in Chinese Sheetrock that caused copper wiring and pipes to corrode. Nothing to do with formaldehyde.

The first generation spray foam insulation had formaldehyde that offgassed.

“The very purpose of formaldehyde is to cause life to cease.”

Well, it would be handy to use in certain circumstances in that case. Like war, I guess. However, just for some more fun, In my professional experience, sometimes in the old LA. County Morgue, saw a lot of formaldehyde go into the already dead...ummm...to preserve what was left of what used to be life. Don’t worry...I am not advocating formaldehyde for anything. Just enjoying another topic outside of watching our country breaking in two.

I don’t know about this, probably such a minute amount on joists wouldn’t be a big deal unless maybe they caught fire?

Formaldehyde is in a lot of products besides construction materials. It off-gases from foam rubber in upholstered furniture, floor coverings and glues, some insulation materials, even from clothing (is this why the tags on new clothes suggest washing before you wear them?). So in some households there is an accumulation from many sources.

Also with the trend to seal up buildings tight for energy efficiency, you could end up trapping toxic gases. One reason I've never insulated my drafty old house.

F~ is the component of wood smoke that irritates one’s eyes.

It is natural chemical that people have been exposed to for millenia.

Take that and smoke it. LOL.

Many mobile homes in the folks park (1991) were tagged, after testing, as dangerous for formaldehyde in the cheap dry wall paneling.

Other regular homes were affected by other toxic crap in the dry wall.

Dry Wall is on my check list for house shopping in Fl.

“Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law Regarding Chinese Drywall - Germano Case

Chinese drywall has a significantly higher average concentration of strontium and significantly more detectable levels of elemental sulfur.
Chinese drywall releases reduced sulfur gases.
The sulfur gases released by Chinese drywall are irritating to the human body. Exposed individuals reported irritation of the eyes, respiratory system, and skin, among other things.
The sulfur gases released by Chinese drywall cause offending odors in homes, making them hard if not impossible to live in.
The sulfur gases released by Chinese drywall are corrosive to metals, particularly copper and silver.
The corrosion on metals caused by the sulfur gases emitted by Chinese drywall causes premature failure of electrical & mechanical devices.
The corrosion on metals caused by the sulfur gases emitted by Chinese drywall poses a fire risk”

“we used to play with mercury, too. Rolling it in balls”

I remember doing that! BTW, there hasn’t been a decent home medical thermometer since they got rid of the mercury.

Okay it’s been awhile. We never used masks as you just couldn’t get rid of the smell anyway but we did use gloves and gowns.

Cancer? Death? Not sure what amount it would take to do either but it must be a lot. In 1965 I was the production manager in a plant that had a line of 50% formaldehyde circulating throughout. One night a fork truck driver hit the line and broke a flange. He didn’t tell anyone and we emptied a million pounds of formaldehyde into the basement. 50% when cooled to room temperature forms paraformaldehyde which is insoluble in anything. It took us several weeks to chip it out and haul it away. Meantime a leaky floor drain got a dose of the stuff into the City of Toledo sewer system killing the treatment bugs. Big mess it was. But nobody got sick or died and I’m sure we were all exposed to a lot more formaldehyde that the folks in this story.
