The young man killed here was a close family friend of Pat Razo, a 42-year-old woman whose sons and a nephew were Latin Kings.
It’s a struggle to raise boys in the neighborhood, she said. She moved to Carpentersville for 10 years to give them a better chance, but her stepson Aaron -- the oldest of her children -- was shot to death in the western suburb in 2007. He was 17.(snip)Then in April of 2016, Razo's nephew was killed. A Latin King too, he was leaving a liquor store in Lawndale when someone shot him.
Razo believes kids like her son and nephew "are tormented" into joining gangs.(snip)“A lot of kids turn because they feel forced, and this is how they protect themselves," Razo said. "And it’s stupid because they’re fighting over land nobody owns, nobody cares about.”(snip)
Razo was worried about telling her son. He’s locked up. “Thank God,” she said. “They can’t get to him there.”(snip)
The day her son died, he had taken his 7-year-old brother to soccer fields near a youth center. Dozens of kids were playing nearby when the shooting started.
“Thank God out of nine shots, the only one he hit was my son (Aaron,) none of the kids,” Razo said. “I think that’s why (Aaron’s brother) is the way he is today.”
Aaron’s brother, now 18, sleepwalks if not medicated and has nightmares if he does manage to sleep. He went through counseling for years, Razo said.(snip)
“He made a promise to Aaron he’ll never turn,” she said. “ ‘Whatever you do, don’t put mom through this. Don’t become a gangbanger.’ Those were his last words.”

Chicago had a Democrat has mayor for almost 90 years straight. In all that time Chicago has lost steel mills and industry, seen further and further decimation of the South Side and West Side - with the exception of some ‘gentrification’ around the South Loop and the Maxwell Street areas, has seen the rise and spread of gang culture, and now stands as a stark dichotomy between the buildings of downtown and the decaying neighborhoods - like Detroit.

The Chicago police have a profile that predicts who will be murdered with astonishing accuracy. One of the victim attributes is if he has been arrested with someone else in the last two years. So, if her son was arrested with someone else within the last two years, he has something like an 85% (my recall) of being murdered when he gets out.
The apparent reason for this is that people arrested with someone else are doing risky, illegal things and, worse, they are doing them with someone else. The danger is not so much from doing risky illegal things, but from associating with others who do them as well. There is no honor among thieves and no moral restraint either. Each of us has the power to kill others, but we are socialized, civilized and moralized so that we don’t. This isn’t the case with young black men who were raised fatherless in a big city ghetto. They are tribal, psychopathic killers merely awaiting the circumstances where they will feel empowered to kill.
Some years ago my white neighbor’s boys were the only whites on the high school basketball team. They palled around with the blacks who had their own cars. These weren’t ghetto kids, but they were definitely not socialized or moralized. One day when the two neighbor’s boys were not along, for once, the captain of the team and his two buddies stopped to collect a drug debt. The guy told them to f*ck off. The captain pulled a gun and shot the guy to death. The whole incident probably took less than thirty seconds. His excuse was, “He dissed me. I had to kill him.” When I talked to the neighbor he said his two kids just nodded and said, “Yep, he had to kill him.” All three of them went to prison for murder, as that’s the law in Florida.
That’s what Chicago is dealing with. The biggest danger to a young black male is another young black male.

She doesn’t know much about prison, does she? Weekends are horrific. I know a man who is mentally disabled and in for life in Pennsy. Cameras were turned off and he was thrown off the second floor onto a table that was secured to the floor. When you get life in Pennsy there is no chance for parole. Today there are courts that specifically handle the mentally disabled. He’s been in for about 25 yrs.

Poor lady has no idea what can, and most likely will happen if other gang members find him and decide to remove him from the prison population. He will most likely have suffered a severe “accident” of some sort. Gangs have their ways of removing the opposition.

When I say fatherless I'm speaking of no adult male figure to teach the boy what it is to be a man.My Dad taught me important lessons about life...about becoming a respectable man...that my Mom,as smart and wise as she was,couldn't teach me in a million years.
As I've said many times to my kid sister who was widowed when her son was 9..."the best mother in the world is a horrible father".I say this to her because she's often inclined to be far too "protective" and far too accepting of behavior that I instinctively knew that my Dad would never tolerate.He's not a bad kid...absolutely not...but I do fear for his future.He's becoming a bit of a sissy...a "mama's boy" (which,of course,is different than gang banger).
