Flashback: Here is what Martin Luther King told a teen struggling with his sexuality

Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. once answered a question from a boy who was struggling to cope with his sexuality.

The rights hero openly discussed homosexuality while writing an advice column for Ebony Magazine in 1958 – while the government was still openly discriminating against LGBT people.

According to a transcript released by Stanford University, the boy asked: “My problem is different from the ones most people have.

“I am a boy, but I feel about boys the way I ought to feel about girls. I don’t want my parents to know about me. What can I do? Is there any place where I can go for help?”

Dr King responded: “Your problem is not at all an uncommon one. However, it does require careful attention. The type of feeling that you have toward boys is probably not an innate tendency, but something that has been culturally acquired.

“Your reasons for adopting this habit have now been consciously suppressed or unconsciously repressed.

“Therefore, it is necessary to deal with this problem by getting back to some of the experiences and circumstances that lead to the habit.

“In order to do this I would suggest that you see a good psychiatrist who can assist you in bringing to the forefront of conscience all of those experiences and circumstances that lead to the habit.

“You are already on the right road toward a solution, since you honestly recognise the problem and have a desire to solve it.”

Though his suggestion of psychiatry may seem extreme by modern standards, his response is moderate by the standards of 1958. US President Barack Obama has previously cited progress on gay rights while paying tribute to Martin Luther King – but King’s niece is a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage.

Not an innate quality?

Go see a psychiatrist?

A "problem"?

Time to tear down the MLK statues next. Homophobic!

Excellent sarcasm.

It is time to put an end to hatred of statues, hatred of history, hatred of people.

The PC Leftists took over the Psychiatry/Psychology arena of medicine in the 70’s. They ‘redefined’ homosexuality as a ‘variation of normal’ way back then. They didn’t announce it, but just went about changing books, etc., to reflect their new ‘belief’. Our culture has been under attack for a very long time......and we had no idea, way back then. MLK wasn’t wrong, he just wasn’t PC then. So, I guess the ‘redefinition’ of marriage is in keeping with the erasure of history. Democrats, the new version of the USSR.

This was 1958. I think that homosexuality was still considered a mental disorder by the APA then. The gay mafia got to them and now his advice would be worthless since the psychiatrist would tell the boy that being gay is not only good, but is desirable.

But, either way. We need to tear down MLK statues because they offend “some Americans” and that’s the standard in our new Cultural Revolution.

I’m wondering if a gay could file a Title IX complaint over MLl days on college campuses.

The man is an admitted homophobic. Should gays be required to participate in honoring him with a holiday?

He means the kid was likely sexually molested, as were most homosexuals.

Today’s shrinks won’t help much.

I don't have a problem with a gay man getting married.

As long as he finds the right woman.

Dr. King was far from perfect, but as a Minister he would have been acquainted with what the Bible says about this.

Right. The boy was molested and needs psychiatric care.

But getting the SJW Time Machine to judge historical figures, MLK statute has got to be removed from Washington D.C.

King also quoted from something called the Holy Bible, a notable homophobic document. He quoted in particular from the writings of a theologian named Paul. Paul elsewhere wrote that gays were “unnatural” and an abomination. Therefore, King was the frequent quoter of a hate speech criminal. All the more reason to remove his statues and stop celebrating his birth.

In the presser yesterday, Trump brilliantly had a reporter saying Thomas Jefferson was a great man. He asked if statues to Jefferson should be removed as well.

We need to take this insane trolly car over to some Democrat heroes.

FDR? He failed to integrate the military in World War 2. Take him off the dime.

Woodrow Wilson? Showed “Birth of a Nation” in the White House. Take him off the hero list.

Kennedy was Catholic, so he’s suspect.

Bill Clinton opposed gay marriage, signed 3 Strikes into law as well as oppressive welfare reform. Take his name off the airport in Little Rock.

Robert Byrd’s name is on 20 buildings and bridges. He was a KKK recruiter. Sandblast his name off post haste.

Obama said publicly many times he was against same sex marriage, before he was for it.

Leftists have become the American ISIS - blowing up history because it offends them while most are completely ignorant of that history.

See my comment above.

As a minister he was likely guilty of hate speech and thought crimes against gays a/k/a homophobia.

All the more reason to tear down his statues.

Oh noes! Should we remove this memorial? After all, MLK Jr. did not embrace homosexuality!

He was right.Just as many (but not all) black preachers will tell you the civil rights movement and the "gay rights" movement have absolutely *nothing* in common.

Being black never has been, and never will be,abnormal despite what some have said...and are still saying.

OTOH being a pervert always has been, and always will be,abnormal despite what some have said...and are still saying.

... because they offend “some Americans” and that’s the standard in our new Cultural Revolution.

Being offended is not enough. At my university, a student majoring in theater refused to act in any role that required her to say the word f**k. She was kicked out of the program and widely condemned by other students and faculty alike. No one came to her defense. She was offended by profane words and got no sympathy.

I wonder if being able to shoot in the head whoever molested you when you were a kid would ‘cure’ these people.

Actors are people who read the words that smart people write down in scripts. Their problem is that they start thinking they are as smart or heroic as the characters they pretend to be.

When the snowflakes are claiming to be offended, I rarely see any supporting statement that says that there is more than mere offense. Your theater major just picked the wrong fight in the wrong place. She would have succeeded with her crusade against the f-word at Liberty University.

Suggesting psychiatric help for a homosexual brands Dr. King as a homophobic hater. He must be erased from history!

“King’s niece is a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage.”

So is King’s daughter Bernice who said something along the lines of her father did not take a bullet for same sex ‘marriage’.
