Sen. Luther Strange will face conservative jurist Roy Moore in Alabama GOP runoff
Washington Post ^ | 08/15/2017 | David Weigel

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Republican voters here put a bitter Senate campaign into overtime, forcing Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.) into a runoff with conservative jurist Roy Moore for the right to represent Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s old seat.

Strange was endorsed by President Trump, the National Rifle Association and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s super PAC, which spent $2.5 million on TV ads to boost him in Tuesday’s primary. That helped push him past Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), saving national Republicans from an embarrassment in a unique mid-summer election marked by low turnout.

Democrats, who have not won a Senate race in Alabama since 1992, nominated former U.S. attorney Doug Jones over a field of fringe candidates, according to a projection by the Associated Press.

On the Republican side, Moore, with nearly 41 percent of the vote, was in first place with about two-thirds of votes counted. Strange was in second with 32 percent and Brooks was in third with 20 percent.

Strange’s second-place showing despite his incumbent status served as a slim victory for Trump and Senate leaders — but with an asterisk. After a tumultuous day during which Trump seemed to defend white supremacists who participated in a protest in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend that left one woman dead, Strange now faces the challenge of needing to continue to court Trump’s supporters during a six-week runoff even as the national appetite for aligning with the president has diminished.

As Strange arrived at a crowded Republican victory event here, there was little worry — in the hotel ballroom, at least — that the president’s stumbling responses to Charlottesville would become a runoff problem. Conservatives, they said, would continue to back Trump over his critics.

it had nothing to do with Trump, and everything to do with Strange being dirty and Alabama knew it.

I thought it was kind of “Strange” [pun involved] that President Trump supported McConnell’s lackey.. I am thinking the President needs McConnell to return the favor.. at any rate, I believe Moore will be the final victor AND an ally of the President.

“I watched the entire press conference, and re-watched some parts. “Stumbling” my arse...”

I watched it twice. Trump was masterful; like Cyrano dueling an army, he parried every interruption.

When Obama ah’d and um’d the press was patient and obsequious. No way Obama’s long windedness could have endured such treatment.

Voted for Brooks in the primary and will gladly vote for Moore in the general election. I suspect the vast majority of Brooks voters will do the same...

If President Trump still can’t figure out WHO HIS FRIENDS ARE, he certainly can’t defeat the GOP/DNC/Deep State/ establishmen that put Meuller up to ‘witch hunt’ for impeachment....enough of this political non-alignment nonsense.

......how about endorsing people like Mel Brooks that elected you.....? geez, 9th grade politics.

Strange dropped an investigation into the then Governor of AL. Then the Governor appointed Strange as interim Senator. People didn’t like that. Strange was the State Attorney General at the time. Plus Moore is a well known conservative who never has been afraid of a fight.

Voted for Brooks also. Find it "strange" no one is mentioning the Democrat winner, former USDA Doug Jones. He appears to be a real viable challenger for the Senate seat. With all this BLM and AntiFa rage flowing about right now, I sense that it may energize the up till now demoralized state Democrat Party. And the Dems really hate Roy Moore.

Reflecting on the "William F. Buckley Jr. rule" - vote for the most conservative candidate who can win.

All I can think about right now is the "William F. Buckley Jr. Rule" - vote for the most conservative candidate who can win.

Therfore, anyone who said Trump couldn't win is automatically disqualified from a credible assessment of Moore's chances.

Did Trump back Strange because he would be the weaker candidate against Moore?

It’s interesting only in that Dave Weigel is writing for WaPo’s small audience of black-clad Antifa followers. Every single phrasing of a simple reporting event, is turned on its head.
