Sun’s eclipse a celestial marvel, but a downer for solar power plants
Press Democrat ^ | 14 Aug 2017

Turn off the lights during next Monday morning’s solar eclipse, and while you’re at it go after the “vampires” that may be sucking $100 worth of electricity a year from your home.

That’s the advice from state utility regulators regarding the astronomical event that will darken skies across a broad swath of the United States as the moon passes between sun and Earth, disturbing animals, drawing crowds to the darkest areas where the eclipse will be total and temporarily curbing output from solar power facilities.

To offset the loss, the California Public Utilities Commission is urging people, businesses and institutions to “Do Your Thing for the Sun,” such as douse the lights, avoid charging electronic devices and turning down the air conditioning 2 to 5 degrees Monday morning.

I call foul. First of all, solar only supplies about 1% of the energy. B) The areas experiencing a total eclipse expect complete darkness for about 2 and a half minutes. 3. Area experiencing a partial would have a light loss equivalent to a cloudy day.

Either this article is nonsense trying to over emphasize the importance of solar, it is made up, or it shows the complete inadequacy of solar. I just don't buy it.

But don’t worry, your Prius will still run fine — it runs on coal.

The eclipse will only last a few minutes.

Good grief. Totality will only last 30 minutes or so. Same as the seasonal shortening of the day during winter.

What is it with leftards, the sky is always falling.

Why aren’t we talking about the intelligent design in the total eclipse?

Things like that just don’t come by chance or circumstance

I have 7 sets of sun glasses. I put them all on and I can see the eclipse fine . I have done that several times.

So funny!

I asked Beau the other day, ‘Why are people preparing as if the Sun is going to be turned off for weeks on end? It’s only going to be a few minutes!’

No wonder this country is in a world of hurt! Clueless people, everywhere!

No problem, all they need is a few million volunteers with candles and flashlights...it is California, after all...

And a lot of the same clueless people, who admonish the rest of us for running our AC or using water, will drive several hundred miles each way, just to see the full 2 and a half minutes of darkness.

OK, I'll turn it down from 70 to 65.

It would be more impressive if the orbital mechanics of Earth, Sun and Moon included the ability to prevent such eclipses.

That would get the attention of many that get it.

Honestly, if there was not a possibility of an eclipse, *that* would be intelligent design with an A+.

I don't have air conditioning, just a swamp cooler. It is either on "High" or "Low." Not going on low when it's over 100 degrees outside.
