Risks of N Korea-US Conflict Turning Into War are High - Lavrov
Sputnik News ^ | August 11th, 2017 | Unattributed

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that risks of conflict between the US and North Korea turning into a full-fledged war are high, this would involve a huge number of victims.

"The risks are very high, especially regarding the rhetoric [between the two countries]. We hear direct threats to use force. At the same time, US Secretary of Defense Mattis stated once again: Yes, this will involve a huge number of human casualties, and yet talks about a pre-emptive strike on North Korea, talks in Pyongyang, that it is necessary to strike the island of Guam, where several US military bases are located, do not stop," Lavrov said.

"Of course, this concerns us very much," Lavrov said at a forum, adding that when it almost comes to a fight "the first step away from danger should be taken by the stronger, smarter side."

The Russian top diplomat also said that Moscow is hoping that common sense will prevail in the situation around North Korea despite escalated rhetoric on part of both Pyongyang and Washington.

I think an astute Tillerson and Trump initiative could make something of this:

"At the same time, Sergei Lavrov stated, that Russia will not accept North Korea being in possession of nuclear weapons".

I’m thinking it is kinda like the airport scene in Rain Man.

This time, NK will not get its money from us. So, what do they do? At what point does Kim say uncle? My opinion: never.

And once one of his people so much as fires a bullet at us, China has made it clear they will not intervene when we crate a rain of “close to their due date” unmanned ordinance on that country.

And he just might.

Uh, we have been “at war” with the Norks for almost 70 years...

Trump speaks their language. They will back down. If they fire an ICBM in the direction of Guam, you can expect we will come down hard on them. I’d like to see us knock it out of the sky.

The Chinese have already told them to STFU.
They’ve been pretty quiet for the last 24hrs.

Sometimes war is not the most unattractive option, even if it is nuclear war. Cowardice brings its own consequences.

Russia and China never seem to mention why the tensions started in the first place.

If Russia and China were “stronger and smarter” it seems they would reign in their pit bull.

I agree. He’s playing out “The Art of the Deal”.

His over the top rhetoric is not for us. It is for Kim. He’s communicating volumes to him that most people are not even aware of - but Kim is. :-)

I think Kim will back down, honestly. He’s not an idiot. At least, I don’t THINK he is...

And to be clear, I think Kim is realizing he is in a smart car playing chicken with a guy in an M1 Abrams who is making it crystal clear that he will not veer off course.

Hey I know, we can get the Russians to work with us to apply some pressure. After all, we have cultivated a great relationship and all in recent years.

....wait, Hillary and the repubs accused them of what? And the Senate just did what?

Great... freakin’ great.

Technically correct. In a practical sense -- no, we we have not been in a real war with NK over the last 7 decades. More like a cold war.

One POSITIVE aspect should be full speed ahead on Missile Defense. Even dems (well maybe NOT maxine waters) should give it the green light.

Kim’s not going to say “uncle.” But he’s not going to fire off a missile, test a nuke, or do anything beyond having his military March in front of his palace. He’s boxed. He’s not pulling any triggers.

So achieving this stasis, what next do China, Russia and the U.S. do to take his biggest toys away?

As usual, anti-American leftists propose a moral equivalence between USA and the wretched totalitarian dictator of the day.

I’d like to see us knock it out of the sky.

We'd likely be competing with the Japs as to whose missile actually takes it out. Yes, they're in total cooperation with us, but when its your mainland country at stake you do what you gotta do.

As astute psychologist, noted on Fox last night, that Kim has backed down all ready. At first he said he would hit Guam, then came Trump’s warning, and the response, we will hit the “waters around Guam.” Now the cocked and loaded and ready to fight tonight threat and our bombers on their way over there. And they guy says we’ll turn you to jelly.

True Americans are warriors. Trump is dealing with a country the size of PA, that we can easily wipe off the map, and now China says they’ll stay neutral.

The worst thing about this, is that Trump again goes it alone. Not even a 100% backing from his own party.

McCain should be dumped off his committees.

The sanctions will do their work, I think. Eventually, the world will learn to treat his rhetoric with the respect it deserves: As background noise.

And if he does nuke a neighbor, his country will become a parking lot. And he doesn’t want that.
