Republican senators who have been a thorn in President Trump's side are beginning to see the political consequences of opposing the White House as pro-Trump activists start to mobilize.
Just this week, it was revealed that conservative billionaire and Trump benefactor Robert Mercer would be contributing $300,000 to a super PAC supporting a primary challenger to Arizona GOP Sen. Jeff Flake. The Republican lawmaker has sparred with Trump on immigration and is promoting a book that argues the GOP is in denial about the president.
Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller who gave only tepid support to Trumps presidential bid and the subsequent push to repeal and replace ObamaCare also learned this week he would face a primary challenge from a Trump backer who has run unsuccessfully for Senate before.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, too, is feeling the heat from Trump and his base as the president vents about the Kentucky Republicans inability to get health care legislation passed.
Flake, though, has been the most overt about his displeasure with the president -- making the TV rounds to discuss his book ahead of his re-election race next year.
"If this was our Faustian bargain, then it was not worth it," Flake writes in "Conscience of a Conservative." "If ultimately our principles were so malleable as to no longer be principles, then what was the point of political victories in the first place?"
The White House has not shied from hitting back.
I think Senator Flake would serve his constituents much better if he was less focused on writing a book and attacking the president than passing legislation, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said last week when asked if the president would back a challenger.

Take 2-4 Senators out in the primaries in the same election cycle and all the rest will get with the program.
Gay Ran Teed.
Take as many out as are running for re-election. I can only think of a handful who are worth keeping.
Trump and Hannity are right. These guys had 8 years in the wilderness and accomplished nothing while Harry Reid craftily did Obama’s bidding. If they can’t start to move legislation then might as well kick them all out. I am honestly sorry that McConnell won reelection as Schumer is demonstrating how a successful opposition leader works.
Kind of weak, considering Flake and Heller haven’t lost anything yet. And their respective subjects have ample reason to primary them, aside from Trump.
Since when did they leave that wilderness? Those guys and Trump are still letting Democrats run the country.
A few?
There was only a SINGLE Republican Senator who voted against limiting President Trump's Constitutionally-granted executive powers.
ONE.
Senate passes Russia sanctions bill, pushing back against Trump
We need to organize a huge rally in Washington aimed at the RINO Senate and House. Primary season is just around the corner and we the people need to demonstrate our anger towards them.
The Nevadan Republican Party leaders crack me up. They came out in support of Harry Reid because his last opponent that the BASE voted for was too conservative.
Then when Reid’s seat was up for grabs, they put a guy in, Heck, who was too chicken sh+t to voice any support for Trump whatsoever. Result is what should have been an easy victory became a total rout.
Now, Heller dances around supporting Trump in any way like a ballerina. Told Democrats at his town meeting he would not defund Planned Parenthood. Had to be drug kicking and screaming to vote for the lousy health care bill. Made Trump and everyone else spend all their time trying to get his vote, which should have been guaranteed. What an ass!
Let the Dems vote for him. I sure as hell won’t!
I’ll never vote rat, but I don’t have to vote pubbie.
Save it for the ballot box...and financial contributions.
It’s access to MONEY that most inhibits outsiders. A Senate seat costs millions.
$10.4 million last year, on average with the most expensive reaching toward $100 million.
I suspect McCain was brought in to kill the Bill, so that Senators like Heller could vote for it knowing it wasn’t good to pass. McCain gave several Senators cover. They wouldn’t have voted yes, if they didn’t already know it would fall.
Well, you have the Mormon Troika up for re-election next year. Hatch, Heller, & Flake, plus that little a$$hole from Tennessee who needs a pair of elevator shoes, Bob Corker. There's your four. And it would be “helpful,” if the somnambulists in Kentucky started scrubbing up McConnell about resigning as “majority leader.”
Heller and Flake are must-have expulsions.
Remember, there are only 10 Republicans up, and 23 Democrats.
It would be nice to get Hatch too but he’ll have no challenger in the primary.
How to cleanse the party
***********
I don’t think this is possible. The culture of defeatism and appeasement in the GOP is so deep it can never be erased. The GOP is what it is.
But we can, and will, put some serious pressure on the RINOs and those who work against our president. More than a few of them will be gone in 2018.
From my POV, any elected Republican that is not doing everything in their power...rhetorically...through cast votes...contributions, legislation...to assist our President under assault from the national and international, anti-American left...must be removed from office.
Those guys and Trump are still letting Democrats run the country.Nickcarraway resident Trump ankle biter must have really hated George W. then.
“It would be nice to get Hatch too but hell have no challenger in the primary.”
It’s amazing that this feckless turd is likely to seek re-election at age 82 after FORTY YEARS IN THE Senate! Only Old White RAT, Leaky Leahy has been there longer at 42 years!
My friends: It starts in June with Heller and Hatch. That will get the snowball rolling. August is Corker and Flake. Too bad Flake doesn’t go first. Heller can drop out honorably by running for Gov. Hatch can retire with great honor but he won’t. Flake has a challenger and we may be stuck with Corker.
With my maybe 10 seats coming our way let’s play musical chairs and make sure the aptly named mutt from Arizona falls on his ass.
Who in the world reads these books these congressmen supposedly write and who gives a flip about what they have to say. They are all so puffed up with themselves.
