A few years ago when shooting dogs was all the rage and cops in many places took it upon themselves to shoot any dog they happened to see, we had two dog shootings in a month here. Our sheriff called a meeting with the local municipal chiefs in the county and explained to them that police officers are trained to deal with dogs and that there is no excuse for shooting dogs and if any more dogs got shot they had better test positive for rabies, because if they were not rabid, the officers doing the shooting would get whatever sanctions the sheriff could come up with and would have very bad evaluations and very bad recommendations for their next jobs. It has not happened since.

“there is no excuse for shooting dogs”

Complete and utter nonsense.

There are INDEED times when dogs are out of control and need to be shot.

I don’t understand all the dog lovers (as opposed to respecters) who pretend everything is lollipops and flowers with all dogs. Dogs, not cats, i.e., do have histories of vicous attacks/maulings, after all.

There is bound to be a nasty dog to get in the way of a cop at an inconvenient time here and there.
