CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan authorities have suppressed a military rebellion near the central city of Valencia, a ruling official said on Sunday, days after President Nicolas Maduro formed a legislative superbody internationally condemned as a power grab.
Socialist Party deputy Diosdado Cabello made the announcement shortly after the release of a video showing a group of men in military uniform announcing a rebellion and calling for a broad uprising against President Nicolas Maduro.
One witness in the area of a military base in the town of Naguanagua reported hearing gunshots before dawn, but Cabello said the situation had been brought under control. Officials said the rebels, whom they described as "terrorists," were trying to steal weapons and that seven people were detained after the attack on the base.
The Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But government allies were quick to denounce the attack as a right-wing plot aimed at bringing down the "Bolivarian revolution" started nearly 20 years ago by the late Hugo Chavez and carried on by his protege Maduro.
"These attacks, planned by delirious minds in Miami, only strengthen the morale of our armed forces and the Bolivarian people," tweeted Socialist Party official Elias Jaua.
On Friday, government allies inaugurated a new legislative superbody that the Venezuelan opposition and leaders around the world denounced as a power grab by Maduro.
In Sunday's video, a man who identified himself as Juan Carlos Caguaripano, a former National Guard captain, said: "We demand the immediate formation of a transition government." He was flanked by about a dozen men in military uniforms.
"This is not a coup d'etat," he said. "This is a civic and military action to re-establish constitutional order. But more than that, it is to save the country from total destruction."

HUH? But, but, but.......hollywood assclowns LOVE Venezuela almost as much as ‘Cuber’. What could be the problem?
This sounds like the Turkish “coup” attempt of last year, which was a Erdogan operation to consolidate power and destroy the legitimate opposition by linking them to the so-called coup. Much of the opposition has been swept up and jailed by falsely being accused of being in the conspiracy.
I wouldn’t be surprised that Maduro is doing the same.
Now he can claim that in crushing his enemies he is only putting down a coup attempt.
Perhaps Jimmy Carter, Susan Sarandon, Michael Moore and Danny Glover can fly back down there on their private jets with their great insights and convince the Venezuelan people not to resist glorious socialism.
Hollywood will love the revolution until the next glorious revolution. Unless they decide it’s a counter-revolution.
A civic and military action is needed here to take power back from the DC political class.
Go big, drop a MOAB on Congress.
Too bad. Those folks’ backs are against the wall. We have problems here, but nothing like that.
We are not well represented here, but unrepresented, poor, and starving would really suck when just 5 or 6 years ago things were pretty good. How quickly things can come apart.
Why whatever do you mean? Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, Oliver Stone and the rest of their Ilk are FIGHTERS who will take up arms against this oppression of the people and standup for their rights... whaddya mean they’re all silent?
And I agree this was a fake rebellion for propaganda purposes.
For the most part, the Turkish ‘coup’ was fake. There’s a general opinion that someone led a group on...getting them hyped up that things could fall into place, and all the key players were laid out for the internal mechanism to take them down quickly with no effort.
Based on how this Venezuelan episode is unfolding...I’d say it’s a repeat.
But the one different piece in this episode....there is an economic collapse in place (unlike in Turkey). Maduro might have six months at best, even with a fake coup.
The Cubans will keep him in office.
Bet on it.
You forgot Sean Penn.
Daniel Duquenal, the “Venezuela News and Views” blogger, tweeting from Venezuela this morning says the incident smells saying rebels should be shooting instead of appearing in front of cameras for apparently staged acts of ‘rebellion’.
Send in Jimmy Carter, Susan Sarandon, Michael Moore, Danny Glover, Colin Powell, Sean Penn, Bill Clinton and the rest of the progressive junta.
Grenada’s socialist thought the same thing.
Yup. When the military turns .. it’s over.. The real question? Why did it take so long and why did so many have to die? and who will pay for the devastation of all the families and the country as a whole?
Where are S Penn , Cloowney , M Moore , J Carey .........?
I’m not making up my mind on this quite yet...
I’ll wait to be handed my opinion by the Brain Trust of Sean Penn, Babs Streisand, Fat Rosie & George Clooney.
Lives are at stake and Celebritards have ALL the answers, so luckily I don’t have to think for myself!
*SNORT*
Maduro is about to go “Stalin” on the military.
Hooray for democrazy.
