CSU eliminates remedial classes in push to improve graduation rates

Aiming to help thousands of students who get sidetracked in developmental courses that don’t count toward their degrees, California State University will do away next year with traditional remedial education.

In an executive order issued Wednesday night, Chancellor Timothy White directed the 23-campus system to overhaul by fall 2018 its curriculum for students found to be unprepared for college-level English and math. About 39 percent of CSU’s incoming freshmen, or 25,000 students, are required to take remedial classes for no credit before they can begin their general education.

University officials argue this is no longer the right approach in an era of mounting concerns over college affordability. They have already undertaken an ambitious plan to more than double four-year graduation rates to 40 percent by 2025.

“The idea that students have to take courses that don’t count toward their degree costs them money and costs them time,” said James Minor, senior strategist for academic success and inclusive excellence at CSU.

Minor added that the separate remediation track sends an “unintended message” to students, many of whom get discouraged that are they not progressing toward their ultimate goal of graduation. Nearly 3,300 freshmen who entered in fall 2015 did not complete their remedial classes and were ineligible to return to school.

“It really invites first-generation students to question whether or not they really belong in college,” Minor said.

More dumbing down. So, colleges are taking money and printing degrees that mean nothing.

Wanna bet you won’t graduate unless you pass Reconstructing Feminism 101, Overcoming the Patriarchy 102, Gender Continuum Studies 101, Learning to Think Trans 201, Welcoming Islam 103?

“It really invites first-generation students to question whether or not they really belong in college”

If they can't meet minimum standards, they DON'T belong in college!

"Make your case to Wells Fargo or B of A. Let them make a business decision on whether they believe you’ll be able to pay it back."

I think we need to bring back something like indentured servitude. They have it in ROTC, i.e. your schooling is paid for but you have to serve a tour of duty.

Why can't any corporation, not just banks, be allowed to loan money to students in exchange for requiring them to work a certain number of years for that corporation?

I know that 'indentured servitude' sounds awful, but if it's just a loan paid back by work rather than money, what's so bad about that?

The criteria now, is, if you can pay the tuition (or get the student loan), you belong in college.

No, it causes kids who don’t belong in college to finally see the light and look for something better to do with their lives.

I went to the article’s web site to look for comments. Like so many liberal rags they have eliminated the comment section. They don’t want readers to dilute their propaganda.

Anything that separates society by ability and/or intellect is inherently racist.

By definition.

God awarded different races differently.

And the left will do all in their power to ensure it ends.

Which some would accept if they would just admit the facts of the case.

As long as nobody makes us buy a product or service we see as unacceptable.

Why don’t they just see if they can count up to their fingers and toes and if they can, give them 3 hours of credit and charge them $1,200 for the class?

Might as will—college means nothing any more.

Old Reader’s Digest “Humor in the Service” story.

Pvt. Jones has to sign a document. “Write your name here.” says the Sgt.

“I can’t write.”

“OK, just put an ‘X’ there.”

Pvt. Jones writes two “X”s.

“What’s the second ‘X’ for?”

“I’m a college graduate.”

the dreaded Subject A test. Fail it, and you were required to take the remedial course in Subject A, at your expense, and time, until you passed.

As an added incentive, Subject A awarded no credits and some draft boards during the 60s required an average 15 hours per semester to keep the student deferment.

Ah, but the “waste” is how the worthless left makes its swag.

And also the maleducation is how they infect others.

So the PCdiots and cultural Marxists create little bundles of discontent, saddle them up with debt, which then spurs their discontent on, and send them out to create more discontent.

They get money while the civilization collapses from their efforts.

It’s a win-win for these leftists.

And they’ve captured the schools to the point that even an individual who can see what they are doing, who agitates against them, and who would shut them down, still sees government NOT funding the universities as interference rather than government funding being interfering.

Me: cut them off of the public teat entirely, 100%, and let what dies die....

Hubby is a 2 times retired Math/Electronics instructor, 20 yrs Ret SCPO, then went on to get teachers degree, Math Major, ended his career of second 20 yrs as Dept Chair of Math/Electronics Ass. Prof at Southwest Jr College.

90% of Memphis students were GIVEN their A/B Math grades and had to go through REMEDIAL MATH before they could take the other course requirements, it is still that way and he’s been retired a decade now.

CSU isn’t a university.

It’s a diploma mill.
