Trump's big trade battle with China kicks off Friday
Axios ^

Posted on 08/02/2017 2:59:46 PM PDT by springwater13

President Trump will give a speech at the White House on Friday, and will sign a memo directing his trade representative to go after Chinese theft of intellectual property and the way U.S. companies are forced to share technology with Chinese firms, as Axios scooped yesterday. Administration officials say Trump is doing this because of complaints he's heard from Silicon Valley executives saying Chinese IP theft is one of their biggest challenges (Peter Thiel was involved in crafting this new step). What happens next: About a week after Trump's announcement, the U.S. Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer, is expected to announce that he's initiating an investigation into unfair Chinese trade practices — using a rarely-used tool, section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. The investigation paves the path to the U.S. taking potentially aggressive retaliatory actions against China such as tariffs on Chinese imports or rescinding licenses for Chinese companies wanting to do business in the U.S. Keep reading 188 words

Context: Chinese IP theft has long been an issue for some tech companies like Microsoft. It's also a major issue for agriculture and manufacturing - and any sector that has proprietary information related to their production practices. U.S. administrations and companies have been wary about publicly confronting the Chinese government, preferring to do things behind closed doors and in a more diplomatic approach.

Are we going to start a trade war with China just when we need their help — or at least their neutrality — in a fight with N. Korea?

Looks like China is not holding up to its end of the North Korea deal. Now President Trump is going to get tough with China.

What are you talking about? Trump has reached out to China countless times on NK.

Should he do like past Presidents did and just shrug his shoulders and give China MFN status again?

Trump tried the carrot with China by back peddling on his campaign promise to get tough. When China left him hanging on Korea Trump decided a few good whacks with a very big stick were in order.

Trump's big trade battle with China kicks off Friday

The Chicoms has been stealing our technology for a long, long time.

We are glad that we are finally coming to our senses.

They need to pay dearly for this theft since no president except our POTUS knows what is at stake!!!

We already know China will do nothing to restrain their rabid dog. This is payback for them doing nothing. They had the carrot, now the sticks come...light at first, heavier later.

China is running a SCAM:

So suddenly the Nork missiles get long legs..?

And at just the time China requires US “understanding” on the South China Sea matter...?

Come on..!

They’re LINKED...!

China is running a SCAM.

They’re pumping up NK to gain leverage elsewhere.

When we oh-so-badly need China Daddy to send Junior to bed without any dessert we end up distracted from something else.

DT ain’t taking the bait, this time, I think.

This could be improved. Add tariffs on Chinese imports, or containing made-in-China parts, to recover unpaid royalties for all the many years of Chinese pirating of software and patents (including interest) with that tariff revenue to be distributed to the victims. THAT would drum up support from expected quarters - think of how Microsoft would like to get back royalties, with interest, of all the pirated copies of Office and Windows sold in China since about 1994. Etc.

LOL, good one

Of course, the reality is China is NEVER going to help us deal with North Korea, because China has been supporting North Korea all along.

Developing nuclear technology takes a lot of special chemicals, materials and machinery. Ask yourself - how did a backwards 4th-world shithole like NK manage to overcome all that to develop a bomb, AND with international sanctions against them at the same time??

Obviously, they had some help .... hmm, now what resourceful country in the area would have an interest in letting loose a kooky thug to threaten all the countries in East Asia? Hmmm???

CHINA has been playing all of us all this time on NK, while economically gobbling up market share and shutting out OUR companies from THEIR markets

Enough is enough, there's only so much abuse you can take

They aren’t helping anyway. At least if we do a trade war then we can back off if they agree to help with the Norks. If not they can deal with the fallout of the Norks overrunning the border.

I agree. I believe it is a mistake to consider NK and China a two separate parties. They are more or less working together in my opinion.
