Even on a fully justified shooting where the shooter is absolved of criminal charges, it is common for an ambulance chaser to run to the family of the person shot and pursue a civil suit for "violation of civil rights" or some similar crap. That means hiring a lawyer and working through the suit. It is very expensive. When you pull the trigger, expect 1 to 3 years of legal wrangling at a cost of $100,000. That's why you buy insurance. It's to cover in case of an unlikely event so you aren't personally financially wiped out.
Michael Brown's family (Ferguson) sued for loss of future income (from a common street thug) to support the parents. The parents got a pretty good payday from the cop's insurance. $1.5 million for "wrongful death". See lawsuit

Civil suits are ugly and depending on the judge could turn out bad for the armed citizen. Sure, I get that too. Still, the guy did good at the time and place he found himself.

Running from a 32 year old, even with a backpack, may not be an option for the older citizens.
Great and accurate statement...........

That's why you buy insurance. No, that's why you buy insurance for your gun. Not me.
I don't plan on shooting anyone and the chances of that actually occurring are near zip. So I won't be paying some corrupt greedy insurance company every month for the rest of my life for Constitutional rights I'm not required to pay for in the first place.

Btw, you better check your info on that settlement again.
I don’t think it was Officer Wilson’s insurance company that paid off Browns family. If I’m not mistaken it was the City of Ferguson that paid the $1.5 million to those screw worms.
