Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) on Friday called for the repeal of the 17th Amendment and the return to senators selected by state legislatures after the Senate GOP's effort to repeal and replace ObamaCare died in a late-night vote.
The 17th Amendment was ratified in 1913 and established the popular election of senators. Previously, senators were elected by state legislatures.
@GovMikeHuckabee Time to repeal 17th Amendment. Founders had it right-Senators chosen by state legislatures. Will work for their states and respect 10th amid
The Senate's "skinny repeal" of ObamaCare failed late Thursday night by a vote of 51-49. The bill would have repealed major parts of the Affordable Care Act, including the individual mandate and would have defunded Planned Parenthood. The vote failed after three Republican senators, John McCain (Ariz.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine), defected and voted against the bill.
We must now return to the correct way of legislating and send the bill back to committee, hold hearings, receive input from both sides of the aisle, heed the recommendations of nations governors, and produce a bill that finally delivers affordable health care for the American people, McCain said in a statement after the vote.
With the latest vote's failure, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said said "it is time to move on" for the GOP.
"What we tried to accomplish for the American people was the right thing for the country," McConnell said early Friday. "I think the American people are going to regret that we couldn't find another way forward."
Huckabee slammed on Twitter the Republicans who sunk the repeal plans:
@GovMikeHuckabee CNN reports Dems will give Lifetime Achievement Award to Murkowski Collins and McCain. Schumer so happy he cried.
Go, Huckabee!!
Let’s undo amendment 16 while we’re about it.
Does he mean the 19th?
Took the words right out of my mouth.
Repeal 16 & 17.
The horse is out of the barn on that one. Even if the 19th were repealed, no state or U.S. territory is going to ban women from voting.
YES! YES! YES!
REPEAL! REPEAL!
Perhaps there is no solution to an out-of-control, bought and paid for US Senate, backed when necessary by rogue judges. That just might be the downfall of the nation.
One has to wonder if it would have saved us from The Manchurian Candidate Obama.
Only to learn that McInsane is kooky enough to start World War IV with Russia.
Yikes - what choices
and when is repealed change term to 3 years with a limit of 4 terms.
Every amendment adopted after the War of Northern Aggression
should be repealed.
There you go...best idea going..!!
Yup.
It’s funny though. A good friend’s mom used to be a leftist and stout feminist. She now makes me look like a lib by comparison. She has stated the 19th Amendment is the worse thing that ever happened to the country on the political front. (We actually talk politics weekly. She is SMART and well informed.)
She does not have a high opinion of most young and dumb female voters, of which she admits she was once one.
And then don’t get me started about milenials. Lol.
While I do not agree, won’t argue with her on the point. After all, without the young and dumb female leftist vote, pretty much no Demscum would have been elected to federal office for the last hundred years or so.
What brought on direct election of Senators was state legislators corrupted (supposedly!) by the Railroads and Robber Barons (Term used at the time!).
There will always be corruption, the only thing you can do is try to keep a lid on it & limit it the best you can.
No kidding. That was a choice between awful and awful.
Well said.
I don’t know about that...let’s face it, CA will still find a way to choose two nutcases, as will NY, MA, IL, NJ, and the rest of the usual suspects...;)
I knew what Obama was so I voted for McCain. Stood in the lines.
Had no idea how crazy he was (and still is).
Still, Obama may have effectively buried the nation after adding nearly 9 trillion dollars to the debt and his perversion, not to mention the race trouble he caused.
I agree, we should repeal the 17th.
At the very least we need new Republicans.
Alexander, Corker, Flake, Gardner, Graham, Hatch, Heller, Hoeven, Murkowsky, McCain, Rubio, Burr, Tillis, Portman, McConnell, Thune, Cornyn, Cochran, Isackson, Blunt, Johnson, Toomey, Capito, Rounds, Fischer, Collins, Wicker, Sasse, Ernst and Shelby are all Democrats in R jerseys.
I agree
