We'll NEVER get good candidate for opponents, either party, if the US Senator in place is running for re-election. That's because everyone will flock to the other party and "vote for the worst". The only way to stop that is to have State Legislatures choose the US Senator. The problem with that is the party not having a majority in the state legislature won't have a chance.
Perhaps there is no solution to an out-of-control, bought and paid for US Senate, backed when necessary by rogue judges. That just might be the downfall of the nation.

I agree, we should repeal the 17th.
At the very least we need new Republicans.
Alexander, Corker, Flake, Gardner, Graham, Hatch, Heller, Hoeven, Murkowsky, McCain, Rubio, Burr, Tillis, Portman, McConnell, Thune, Cornyn, Cochran, Isackson, Blunt, Johnson, Toomey, Capito, Rounds, Fischer, Collins, Wicker, Sasse, Ernst and Shelby are all Democrats in R jerseys.

Repeal the 17th - yes, yes, yes!!!!
With enactment of the 17th, States lost tremendous power which the central government took over with glee!!

No, don't repeal it. Does anyone here know the history of state legislatures selecting Senators right up until the passage of the 17th?
It became corrupt and full of smokey backroom dealing with bribes and back-scratching.
Let Senators get voted by the people - but they would have to win a majority of the counties within their state. It would be an electoral college sort of. This would eliminate the urban centers from picking the winners and losers.

Agree 100%.
But the repeal will NEVER start in Congress. Article V is the only hope for our Republic.

I’m for it, but:
It would only basically achieve one thing, getting a lot of the money out of senate races.
There are some states that would have a much different senate membership if the legislatures appointed: VA, for example. But in AZ, I seriously doubt the state legislature would have tossed out McTurd for anyone else, let alone Kelli Ward. Ditto Flakey.
The MAJOR advantage of repeal of the 17th would be that senators would once again at least somewhat take the view that they were representing their STATE and not “the people” of the state, which should produce some strengthening of federalism. But it’s not a panacea.

If Senators are not representing states, then why do we need them at all? Just get rid of the Senate altogether and turn its duties over to the House of Representatives.

Nothing will change unless the 16th Amendment is repealed.
ALL of today’s political problems stem from that seed.

Not a guarantee Obamacare would go away. State legislatures like the Medicaid subsidies.

This is a great idea. Let’s implement term limits at the same time. Two birds, one stone.

Why have U.S. Senators at all?
Just let the state governors represent whatever the senators duties were/are. Senators are supposed to represent the wishes of the states they represent, so, why not have real representation of how each state feels? Senators have been going their own way, and are not representing the wishes of their respective states.
