Hope my German isn’t too rusty, but “Judenfrei” describes a place that never had Jews in it at all.
OTOH, “Judenrein” would mean a place that has been cleansed of its Jews, just as the Nazis and Muslims intended.

This reminds me of a story once told to me by a Lubavitch rabbi. The Lubavitch chassidim are easily recognizable by the mens' long black caftans, long beards, and black fedoras with a distinctive crease in the top. This rabbi was a campus chaplain at a Maryland college. He was at a basketball game when suddenly a large paper cup half full of ice and Coke came flying at him and hit him on the side of the head. "Jew!" hissed the thrower.
The rabbi told me his reply to this act and epithet. He thanked the guy for recognizing his Jewishness!
