A white former police officer in a Dallas suburb was indicted by a grand jury on a murder charge for fatally shooting an unarmed black high school freshman in April with a high-powered rifle as the teenager and four others drove away from a house party, prosecutors said Monday.
The former officer, Roy D. Oliver II, an Iraq war veteran who was on the police force in the working-class city of Balch Springs, was also indicted on four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon by a public servant.
The charges were announced by the Dallas County district attorney, Faith Johnson. If convicted of murder, Mr. Oliver, 37, could face a prison term of five to 99 years or life, the same range as the aggravated assault charges.

Yeah. I read up on this when it happened.
Murder charges are appropriate.
He lied upon questioning.
Even the police should never talk to the police.
NYT click bait.
Maybe, but the victim is still dead and the alleged shooter has been indicted.
How did he expect to justify, legally or morally, a threat to himself or others from people driving away?
So what on earth happened, or seem to.
Was it like the cop just snapped? Flashback to a combat situation, then shot on autopilot as it were? Maybe it will be an insanity defense situation.
I’d also be wondering about temperamentally. I wouldn’t be surprised to find an insanity defense attempted here. Good boy, a real Scout supposedly, then this inexplicable act.
In a more chivalrous environment, a man like this might begin to notice himself being unable to control himself and might voluntarily leave the force, instead of finding it something hospitable to hide behind.
I’d like to read about it from another source, thanks.
Cops justify that all the time and get away with it. One guy got away with the “fear of my life” excuse in an incident where he purposely jumped on the hood of a car and dropped a dozen rounds into the (unarmed) driver (who had committed no crime).
Good. A lot more to go including the latest in Minneapolis.
Good. A lot more to go including the latest in Minneapolis.
There has to be some logical limit put on this phenomenon, which is exacerbated by the de facto situation of almost all effective armaments now being in the hands of government organs. Oh, we got to bend over backwards for the blue, because who else would help in case of a heinous crime?
If you could flee rather than fight and the result wouldn’t be any worse — well, we could look at ourselves in the mirror with respect to SYG. Because SYG reflected becomes this too. I don’t know the full moral solution here. All I know is that sometimes we are a blindly combative society when it wasn’t necessary.
I can’t remember the last time the NYTimes identified skin color in the title.
And also for unjustified dog shooting. Then bring up on charges the bastards who hired these pukes in the first place,
He fired into the back of a fleeing car.
If the driver is fleeing in your direction, a cop is free to fire. Leaving and driving away? Nope. Can’t fire.
Then the cop lied. Cop dash cams caught him lying. As well as other cops on the scene who would not/could not aid in his lies.
If a black teen had killed a white cop; you can be sure you would not see it in the Slimes.
This is why it looks like “flash back” situation to me.
Someone with a suspected car bomb drove past your checkpoint; he’s now receding.
ROE in combat: shoot the sucker.
ROE in civilian: let him go.
But now a young man is dead for no good reason and this guy’s life is ruined.
