Millions of Venezuelans signaled their disapproval of President Nicolás Maduro's plan to hold a constituent assembly by casting ballots on Sunday in a vote unlike any other in this nation's history.
More than 98 percent of voters sided with the opposition in answering three yes-or-no questions drafted with the aim of weakening Mr. Maduro's legitimacy days before his constituent assembly is expected to convene. Opponents see the assembly as a power grab by an increasingly unpopular leader and fear he may use it to do away with democratic elections.

Shortly before midnight, a group of Venezuelan university administrators tasked with overseeing the vote count said that more than 7,186,000 ballots had been cast. Organizers hailed the outcome and the turnout.

While Mr. Maduro is widely expected to ignore the outcome, organizers hope that it invigorates a protest movement that has gained momentum over the past couple of months. Tensions have soared across Venezuela amid widespread food and medicine shortages and spiraling inflation that the government routinely plays down.

Socialism is wonderful ... until it isn't!
And there it is. Once they gain power thru a vote, socialists reveal their dictatorial nature. Then elections and people be damned.
Unexpected.
I’m frankly shocked the NY Times reported this. I might have my third heart attack and die if CNNMBNBCCBSABCNBCFOX etc.. report it also.
Nice...I knew Venezuelans would get sick of socialism. Time to get pictures of Venezuela and Photoshop Dems by putting them in the pictures... Capitalism or Socialism, decide in 2018...
Yes, but note the absence of a Comments forum on this one . . .
A liberal dream, doing away with elections after an Hillary or Obama win
From what I heard from a dissident, 5 million oon would have been a big success. 7 million means civil war.
——No one should doubt that it is binding -—
Absent an army, the vote is meaningless
Opportunity for Trump. If the people overthrow this thug Trump can authorize an immediate relief effort to stop the food shortage, then work with the new government to restore business connections with the US. Venezuela should be one of the most prosperous little countries in the world.
It was working great until there was nothing left to steal.
Will people learn a lesson from this? I doubt it. The backers of socialism will never give up trying to force the world into seizing all money earned and giving it to the ruling elite and the indolent.
Venezuelans should themselves. They voted for socialism and they got it in spades.
Well darn. I was hoping that by rejecting the assclown things would be back to normal within a few days. A week maybe? /s
Will they ever be “normal”? Saw ‘some man on the street’ interviews last night on Watters World of college numbskulls being asked to describe socialism. FAIL. But they love uncle burnme. Fidiots.
The Vens have been disarmed for over a decade.
They are not sick of Socialism..., just sick of enduring it with no money/food/goods! If their wishes were fulfilled, they would happily exist in their "Socialist Paradise"!
Overwhelming numbers might carry the day, but it will be a bloody one.
History teaches that once you self-select socialism, as Venezuela clearly did, it is hard to go back without bloodshed.
That is an excellent definition of exactly what Socialism is. It is also happens to be the very foundation and basis of the Democrat Party.
They believe in one man, one vote.... one time.
And, they choose the one time that counts.
Like they tried in Floriduh in 2000.
