Applebee’s Franchise Owner Forced To Cut 1,000 Jobs After New York’s Minimum Wage Hike

The CEO of Apple-Metro Inc., a company that operates about 40 Applebee’s restaurants in the New York metropolitan area, said he’s been forced to cut at at least 1,000 servers in the past year as a result of New York’s recent minimum wage hike.

“We have 1,000 less servers this time this year than we did this time last year,” Zane Tankel told Fox Business’ Stuart Varney on Monday.

That amounts a two-thirds reduction of his total workforce, Tankel said.

Tankel said the minimum wage increase has forced him to adopt a “concierge” type model of having servers help customers operate self-serve tablets and make them feel “warm and comfortable.”

“I’ve always said increasing minimum wage is technology’s best friend,” Tankel said.

I'm certain we will soon see someone from the NYS government — perhaps an elected official — coming out to say that there is absolutely no connection between the minimum-wage hike and Applebee's decision to cut their workforce, and that the explanation lies in the CEO's desire to line his own pockets with more profits.

I do like to adopt an Old Man’s voice and tell my children, “When I was young, kids used to have jobs in High School and College. Those were the days. You never see that anymore ...”

So it may take longer to get your food and you’ll have to wait on yourself, but you can feel good knowing the people who are left are being paid more than the jobs are worth on the open market.

Liberal paradise!

But on the other hand, I’d probably prefer to order from a tablet than to give orders to a person who then puts out food in a random order and lets the diners swap plates til they get it right - and of course expects a 20% tip for “great service”.

But then all the ads I hear on TV talk about the “New New York” and how great the taxes and economy are there.

I helped my boys through Technical College. I flat out REFUSED to give them one DIME if they were going to study some Liberal Arts BS.

I told them I would help them financially ONLY IF they were learning to fix things that were broken or build new things that people needed.

Worked like a charm. More parents should try this. ;)

Of course this law failed, like all liberal laws. Liberals should never be allowed to touch the economy, or to have anything to do with pay or prices. They always screw it up.
Naturally, after a liberal law fails, liberals always demand a strengthening of the law that failed, leading to a repeat of the failure of the law, leading liberals to push for making the law stronger, which fails.....(repeat until doomsday)

That is EXACTLY what you will hear, because it's standard Marxist theory. Because we all believe in freedom in all its various forms, including personal as well as economic freedom (which are really inseparable), we aren't steeped in Marxist theory. So let me help with why you're right.

Marx believed that laborers are entitled to every dime of what they produce, and that any profits are exploitation. Of course that lazy slacker B@$t@rd didn't take into account the idea of capital investment and risk, or much of anything else. His theories were based on resentment, rather than actual economic reality.

So any time a company reduces costs in order to maintain or improve profits, which typically involves reducing labor costs in today's economy, the left is like poo flinging monkeys in their denunciation, for reasons they probably couldn't articulate.

They’ve done exactly what they want: given raises to the unions whose wages automatically move up when the minimum wage is raised. It’s the liberal way. Next they’ll want a program to help those they screwed.

I have no problem with this. If the remaining employees earn a living wage, pay their share of taxes and aren't dependent on any federal handouts it's a net gain for the economy. Those out of work are going to have to make demands like less competition with non-citizens for jobs and jobs returning to the US.

It's a death spiral for the economy that there are workers who have to be subsidized by handouts because they can't find jobs that provide for sustainability. Who ends up paying? We all do.

That minimum wage should be left up to Mr. Tankel.
Good Service combined with a good product should bring in a decent wage. You still get to smoke your MJ at the dumpsters during slow periods.

Now NY gets to pay that minimum wage. It’s called unemployment. Soon after it is welfare and food stamps.
(They can rename food stamps all they want, it is still food stamps)

They already have fast food dispenser machines that cook and serve the food to you. The only cost is the occasional shutdown to repair and/or refill the fast food dispenser.

And that the technology business owners use to replace humans needs to have a tax imposed to replace the lost payroll taxes.

I did the same for my engineer and machinist sons. We would support their decisions but there was only money for real stem studies.

The real minimum wage is and always has been $0.00

The upper crust will never feel this because they can afford to subsidize their children into their late 20s while they pursue college education and unpaid internships. The middle to lower class feels it the most, but unions like it and it gives the jobless poor more time to protest or be whipped into a frenzy for election day, where they will have to vote for more government to support their government-supported existence.

The key question concerning NY’s minimum wage hike is did the lawmakers who supported the hike get reelected?
