Supposedly among noted Physicists, he is not even ranked in the top twenty.

Absolutely true. There was at least one prominent astrophysicist I heard on one of the science documentaries say as such. In fact he’s been challenging him for years on a few key issues, attempting to expose some serious flaws in his thinking. I too believe his fame and status is mostly about his physical situation rather than actual scientific achievement.
