Laser induced break-down spectroscopy is not new stuff- hand held detectors stuck into samples of substances have been around for a while. Stand-off is the long pole in the tent so to speak- exciting chemicals beyond a few centimeters is hard to due (the lasers in hand held devices are not very powerful, and the spectrometer input is nearly contact with the sample). Sending enough energy via laser to a distant target makes for an unsafe laser ( eyes, burns skin etc, ablates metal/paint etc. Of course, detecting the excited light energy given off the sample is key- an optical telescope is subject to interference, dust, smoke, temperature variations in the space between lens and target, let alone the lens itself.

The Army found that the most efficient tool used for standoff detection of IEDs was the M1 Eyeball coupled to a brain trained to look for anomalies or “is it the same or has it changed” human observers operating on routes etc. detecting VBIEDs at check pints was basically a risky business- stopping and inspecting well outside standoff distance was key- making the operator turn on his lights, washers, horn and other accessories was found out be useful in pre-detonating bad guys....

The counter IED cycle was vicious, we defeat one technology, they employ another, we defeat that they deploy another eventually retuning to the original dumb wires and victim activated traps.

Risky business seems to be understatement! I don’t think most know how involved and dangerous these processes of IED detection were/are!!!

Thank you for your service!!

Were you aware there was a jet explosion at Miramar Marine Base - I actually heard the explosion. Very scary.

This all appears to be some sort of cumulative attacks upon our military bases ..??

Are they trying to distract us ..?? While they continue to plan more attacks ..??

Latest news: 7 July 2017, 7:46 AM EDT

LINCOLN — Hanscom Air Force Base returned to normal Thursday afternoon in the wake of an explosives scare that led to more than a dozen buildings being evacuated, but police continue to investigate when and where containers being shipped to the base were in contact with explosives.

Read more: http://www.lowellsun.com/todaysheadlines/ci_31122436/hanscom-afb-temporarily-evacuated-explosives-scare#ixzz4m9LHOySV

This part explains who were involved:

(Base Commander USAF Colonel) Hund said the moving truck was delivering personal property to someone who lives on the base, but he declined to provide more specifics.

(Massachusetts State Police Major) Leahy said two people who were in the truck were cooperative, as was the individual whose property was being delivered. No one is suspected of criminal wrongdoing, and no arrests are expected.

See the link in my post below yours.

Key sentence:

No one is suspected of criminal wrongdoing, and no arrests are expected.

No attack. False alarm.
