Why poverty is skyrocketing in the suburbs
CNBC ^ | 03 July 2017 | Dwyer Gunn

If you were to ask a group of Americans to pinpoint poverty in this country, a good many would tell you you to turn a watchful eye to the inner-city blocks. Perhaps others would suggest you look at the isolated valleys of rural Appalachian coal mining towns. But few would point you to the suburbs, our country's neatly manicured, leafy green mazes of driveways and cul-de-sacs. That's a shame; it's this very misperception that makes the issue so pernicious.

In recent decades, the number of suburbanites living in poverty has increased at an alarming clip. In 1990, there were 9.5 million poor people living in America's 100 largest cities, and 8.6 million poor people living in the suburbs of those cities. By 2014, there were 17 million poor people in the suburbs of the country's 100 largest metro areas, and less than 13 million in the cities themselves. The average suburban poverty rate, meanwhile increased from 8.3 percent in 1990 to 12.2 percent in 2014.

Poverty, in other words, is now a suburban problem, just as much as it's an urban or rural problem. In his new book, Places in Need: The Changing Geography of Poverty, Scott Allard, a poverty researcher and professor at the University of Washington, explores this phenomenon and its many implications. Allard spoke to Pacific Standard about what's driving suburban poverty rates, how the mismatch between perception and reality may affect support for safety net programs, and what the changing distribution of poverty means for the social safety net.

Could it have something to do with 0bie’s Move ‘em out to the suburbs push?

Remember when his HUD guy said there had to be a certain amount of Sect 8 housing available in the ‘burbs?

I’ll try to find threads (that were posted, here), on it.

Yep, that’s exactly what it is.

If you had a graph of this suburban poverty along side suburban graffiti the patterns would match perfectly. Democrats desperately need to disperse the hell they created onto decent people. We were starting our own cities and keeping our taxes.

The Obama plan was to disrupt the white urban areas with the Section 8 crowd!

“The Obama plan was to disrupt the white urban areas with the Section 8 crowd!”

Urban and suburban areas are disrupted by falling property prices and falling property prices are due to the residents failure to maintain their families, homes and careers.

When you demand that every housing project have a certain number of houses reserved for section 8 (aka low cost) housing you will get poverty in the suburbs.

It is not that hard.

And in the suburbs they will find it hard to get a job without a car and so they will be locked into poverty.

The suburbs is where you move after you have built up a certain amount of personal wealth.

My neighbor, Obama’s most ardent supporter, is now screaming and yelling about the Somalis in the neighborhood. Perhaps she will be able to add 1 + 1 in the future.

I’ve seen a Somali family with really precious, well=mannered little kids but also have a terrifying fellow at the gym who looks at me with pure hatred. Apparently, they don’t have white grandmothers going to the gym in Mogadishu.

It’s not just that. My daughters car was stolen out of our driveway. When talking to the cop I said.....hey, this is a great neighborhood. He said......this is the perfect neighborhood. Everybody works and goes to bed early. There’s no one around to see/hear anything and even if you’re up your dens/family rooms are all in the back of the house. Perfect neighborhood.
We live in a country club area.

BINGO....corrupt government now has millions of Americans spending $200, $400, $700. ++ per MONTH in property taxes alone, and even if these folks own their homes.

I find this criminally obscene.

And health insurance is now as much as (or more than) mortgage payment.

I think they are talking about non-Section 8 people in the suburbs

There ya go. Just for medical insurance and property taxes, Middle America is spending upwards of 1,000+ per month on that ALONE.

Then add in everything else....lol

However, I cannot work up much sympathy. The electorate got what it voted (or not) for. It was their responsibility and they whiffed it.

Really? You blame Middle America?

So you trusted the election corruption under Obama? And do ya believe tens of millions who are here illegally, compounded by wide spread voter fraud, has not been a factor in our elections over the past decade or two?
