Tensions high in Himalayas as China demands India withdrawal

China on Wednesday insisted India withdraw its troops from a disputed plateau in the Himalayan mountains before talks can take place to settle the most protracted standoff in recent years between the nuclear-armed neighbors who fought a brief but bloody frontier war in the area 55 years ago.

India must pull back its troops "as soon as possible" as a precondition to demonstrate "sincerity," foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters at a daily news briefing.

His comments came after weeks of saber-rattling in New Delhi and Beijing, as officials from both sides talk up a potential clash even bloodier than their 1962 war that left thousands dead.

The confrontation could spill over into the G-20 summit in Germany later this week where Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi are expected to meet at a gathering of leaders from five emerging economies on the sidelines of the main event in Hamburg.

The month-long standoff — and unconfirmed reports of troop buildups on both sides of the border — has also underscored the swiftly deteriorating relations between the two Asian rivals.

China claims about 90,000 square kilometers (35,000 square miles) in the Indian province of Arunachal Pradesh, referred to informally by some Chinese as "Southern Tibet." India says China is occupying 38,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles) of its territory on the Aksai Chin plateau.

In 1962 the PLA was still manned by veterans of the revolution that ended in 1950 and the Korean War in 1952 & 1953.

While technically a stalemate the Chinese army lost more than 1 million men in Korea. I’d hardly call that a victory.

The last military operation conducted by the PLA was in 1979 war with Vietnam and the PLA got it’s collective butt kicked up one wall and down the other.

India has fought 4 wars with Pakistan. The Indians won three of them and fought the Paki’s to a standstill in the other.

The PRC buys into the inevitability of Marxism and doesn’t think their army can lose. They are arrogant, proud and extremely conceited.

Maybe India could teach them some humility?

We should definitely side with India and drive a wedge into the BRICS block, like they are trying to drive a wedge between us and South Korea and Japan and our other allies in that region. Would also be a great leverage in our relations with China. Last time we refused to supply arms to India, we lost it to the Soviet Union for many years. The Soviets were only very happy to arm India against China. This is what global politics is all about.

China also benefited from exploiting what was a growing friendship between the leaders at the time. Given that betrayal, I doubt India will ever be caught off guard with China again. The series Guns And Glory are good documentaries of the various Indian conflicts. This episode covers the 1962 Indian-Sino conflict.

One night I started looking on Wikimapia for Chinese and Indian military facilities on the Plateaus. The degree of fortification is immense.

What got me started looking was looking for hydroelectric facility locations. The numbers of those is staggering and the power potential is equally staggering.

War near the top of the world. Like the one between the Indians and Pakis on the high Himalayan glacier.

Tell the ChiComs to demonstrate “sincerity” by not demanding preconditions to talks.

With China’s expansionist actions it won’t be long before they claim Ceylon is “Southern China” /s

“China claims” ... well duh! The ChiComs would claim South Texas if we shared a border with them.

No problem. Being relatively new here, I haven’t figured out how to make it a direct link, yet. Any suggestions?

So, think someone in State Department, or the Philippines Foreign Ministry, will think to ask China to demonstrate its “sincerity” by withdrawing its armed forces from the South China Sea Islands (Spratly Islands)? Good luck with that.

China 'won" its short war with Việt Nam in that the PLA did what it announced informally it would do. It went into VN a certain distance and captured several towns , held them for a short time, and withdrew. The stated aim was to punish Việt Nam and bring it into line with the Middle Kingdom. Well Việt Nam has been there before and memories are long in that part of the world. China won it but the cost in aircraft, tanks and men was much higher than PLA counted on and Việt Nam made a point of not committing its regular army but rather using "local militia" forces. China did what it said it set out to do but will not do it again without nukes.

In Korea it was apparent that the PLA was spent and quite undermanned due to irreplaceable tremendous losses and had the UN/US made one more offensive in 1953 it would have collapsed entirely.

With that Uncle Sam set the template for Việt Nam where we actually won the war twice, in 68 and 72 but then pulled back, in 68 because we had been beastly to the VC n wiping them out and they needed a breathing spell to recoup and in 72 because Congress pulled the plug altogether after the Paris Agreement. Both times the North, according to General Giáp and other officials since, was preparing to be invaded and the projected occupation and sending families to Russia while gathering records for destruction when we stood down.
