Doctors Say 4th Of July Sparklers Are Too Dangerous For Kids. Try BUBBLES AND POM-POMS Instead
Daily Caller ^ | July 3, 2017 | Eric Owens

America's doctors are warning that the use of sparklers on the Fourth of July is just too darn dangerous for your children.

To avoid the risk of injury, you should give your kids bubbles, glow sticks and pom-poms to play with this Independence Day. Those things are safer and almost just as fun.

Sparkler injuries lead to 1,900 emergency visits each year in the United States (pop.: 321.4 million), according to Providence, Rhode Island NBC affiliate WJAR.

"They're actually not so benign," Dina Burstein of the Injury Prevention Center at Rhode Island Hospital told WJAR. "And I think what people don't realize is that they actually burn at a very high temperature - up to 2,000 degrees - so that's the equivalent of what a blow torch would be at."

Not very surprisingly, the most typical sparkler injuries are burns, Burstein added - "very commonly to the hands, often to the face, injuries to the eyes."

The doctor helpfully suggests using "things like pom-poms and glow sticks" instead of sparklers to celebrate America’s independence. Bubbles and noisemakers are other good substitutes, Burstein said.

Americans say doctors weren’t spanked enough as children and now think way too highly of themselves.

Sparklers and home fireworks are illegal in most places. When people get burned and go to the emergency room, they should be met by police. My best friend lost a home because of a neighbor’s illegal fireworks setting his house on fire. I have no sympathy for law breakers of any kind. And there is no excuse for this because you can’t go 20 miles anywhere without a municipal fireworks display.

For the first time in a very long time - I bought more than just sparklers for the 4th. I’m probably not allowed to use most of it in town...but the neighbors always do. We usually get a nice show from them. Decided this time I’ll do something too. The Mrs. will be upset with the amount I spent, but I’m at the point where I’m tired of working for just the future....time to live a bit and we can afford to.

Biggest thing I could see is eye injury. Give little Johnnie some safety glasses and a pair of leather gloves.

Being a kid, he’ll think that’s cool too.

I remember the mass die-off from sparklers of kids that grew up in the 80s....oh wait.

Make sure that your children are wearing shoes/footwear. A dropped sparkler can make a nasty and painful burn on a child’s bare feet.

There were 7 children in our family and none of us was ever injured playing with sparklers, because my parents educated us and kept an eye on us. Anything can be dangerous.

"they actually burn at a very high temperature - up to 2,000 degrees"

It's important to learn about third degree burns early in life.

Anyone who’s had to treat a child for third degree burns from an accident involving sparklers is not going to sit there and say, go ahead,,, I get that. When you sell millions of them a year 2000 burbs is slow risk, but it’s still a nasty thing to deal with when you have too.

I completely understand someone who has to deal with the accidents that do happen suggesting that it’s not a great idea to give kids these things.

That said, most folks are going to and most kids who do get them won’t end up hurt

No they're not. They've been legal in Michigan for years. Now, we can legally use ones that leave the ground around all major holidays.

You sound like my anti-fireworks nut neighbor across the street, for whom I purpously buy the biggest, loudest legal mortar shells I can find.

Like fireworks, independence and freedom have some potential for danger. However when wisely used the result is worth it.

Maybe NJ is Stupidstan needing a night. Here in Nebraska where policies are very lax I didn’t hear a single siren all night.
