Actually the water is moving south in an increased volume. The recent thread on the island forming at Cape Hatteras point is the proof.
Cape Hatteras is the point where the south flowing Labrador current meets the north flowing Gulf Current. The increase in the Labrador current sand carrying flow drops all the sand on meeting the Gulf flow.
