Fraudulent Obamaphone Program
Washington Times ^ | Stephen Dinan

The controversial “Obamaphone” program, which pays for cellphones for the poor, is rife with fraud, according to a new government report released Thursday that found more than a third of enrollees may not even be qualified.

Known officially as the Lifeline Program, the phone giveaway became a symbol of government waste in the previous administration. Now a new report from the Government Accountability Office bears out those concerns. The report, requested by Sen. Claire McCaskill, Missouri Democrat, also says the program has stashed some $9 billion in assets in private bank accounts rather than with the federal treasury, further increasing risks and depriving taxpayers of the full benefit of that money.

“A complete lack of oversight is causing this program to fail the American taxpayer — everything that could go wrong is going wrong,” said Mrs. McCaskill, ranking Democrat on the Senate’s chief oversight committee and who is a former state auditor in Missouri.

Where are the Republican votes to kill the program? More and more it appears the swamp draining needs to start with the “conservatives”.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, (Dem-Missouri) says the Obamacare program has stashed some $9 billion tax dollars in assets in private bank accounts rather than with the federal treasury, further increasing risks and depriving taxpayers of the full benefit of that money.

Take it one step further, Senator........tell us the name(s) of those on the private bank accounts.

Massive expansion under Obama. Typical of government programs desperate to spend money. Cell carriers would have people hang out at welfare offices trying to pitch free phones to people signing up for benefits. Very little oversight. No vetting to prevent fraud and abuse.

Next they should look at the battery powered wheel chairs that are handed out like steak dinners. I asked my TX congressman about this and got a canned reply that really said nothing....cause it is a swamp thing (IMHO).

Why can’t these be reused? Why are some stuck in yards and grass growing around them? Who “owns” them-—govt. or the person getting the gift from taxpayers??

Then, go to nursing home Medicaid users. Do you have family? Let them take care of you, like the old days.

We’ve just gotten to rich to be stern, but we’re broke rich!

So the people who benefited from signing up people were in charge of signing up people.

A recipe for fraud.

This is all a way to buy poor votes and pay off cellular companies with taxpayer money. People doing the sign ups work on commission. All the incentives are for expanding the program with no controls in place from r restricting growth.
