No Need for Federal “Chicago Crime Gun Strike Force” if Police Allowed to Do Their Jobs

No Need for Federal “Chicago Crime Gun Strike Force” if Police Allowed to Do Their Jobs Written by Bob Adelmann

In an early-morning tweet, President Donald Trump decried the violence in Chicago and announced that he was sending in “federal help.” But the rationale for this “help” would not exist if Chicago police were not hamstrung by the war on cops and the “Ferguson Effect.”

President Donald Trump’s early morning Tweet on Friday decried the continuing violence in Chicago and announced that he was sending in “federal help.” Tweeted the president: “Crime and killings in Chicago have reached such epidemic proportions that I am sending in Federal help. 1714 shootings in Chicago this year!”

As of Sunday June 25 there were 308 murders in Chicago as compared to 311 at the same time last year. President Trump disparaged the continuing violence in Chicago during his campaign and then following his inauguration, calling it “horrible carnage” and “out of control” and threatening to “send in the feds” without defining exactly that he meant.

With the creation of the “Chicago Crime Gun Strike Force” (unfortunately linking crime with guns in the public’s perception) observers are learning more about what he meant: It will involve a “closer” working relationship between the Chicago Police Department (CPD), state troopers, federal ATF agents, and Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutors. It will also involve more federal money and technology to build out “tech-based nerve centers” that can track the location of gunshots and then tie them to known criminals and gangs. There will be another 20 federal ATF agents involved as well, completing the plan that Chicago ATF Special-Agent-in-Charge Celinez Nunez recommended during conversations with DOJ officials earlier this year.

However, the federal “rescuers,” and local authorities who want the feds to come to the rescue, are overlooking a crucial, documentable fact: The crime wave in Chicago is being exxaberated by a war on police in general and the "Ferguson Effect" in general. And this tragic, and avoidable, increase in crime is being used as a rationale for the federal intervention.

More horse poo from the left. There’s no war on police, and no Ferguson effect. There are only Democrats.

“Project Exile.

Use it.”

Exactly.

But Democrats refuse to allow Project Exile in their big cities. And the unsaid reason is that such programs lock black thugs up in Federal prisons. In Chicago as in all other Democrat big cities the Mayors would not permit such Government intervention that would directly affect their supporters.

FBI confirms the deadly costs of a ‘War on Cops’

A new FBI report finds that the “War on Cops” is real and has deadly consequences.

Undertaken last year after a spate of cop-killings around the nation, the study confirms that areas across the nation have seen “de-policing” in the wake of protests that political leaders seemed to support.

“Law enforcement not only felt that their national political leaders [publicly] stood against them, but also that the politicians’ words and actions signified that disrespect to law enforcement was acceptable in the aftermath of the [Michael] Brown shooting,” the study notes.

“The Assailant Study — Mindsets and Behaviors” examines the men behind 50 cop-killings last year. Most of the perps were simply looking to avoid arrest, but a full 28 percent actively hated police and desired to “kill law enforcement.”

Several, including the killers in Dallas and Baton Rouge, were clearly inspired by the protests that began in Ferguson, Mo.

Nor does the role of movements like Black Lives Matter end there: A number of the killers, the FBI found, were more willing to use deadly force because they believed they were less likely to pay a heavy price for it in the new environment. And, in fact, the study notes that officers across the country report a withdrawal from proactive policing.

In short, the FBI has again proved the Manhattan Institute’s Heather Mac Donald right. She’s spent the last two years describing this dynamic, stating (for example), “Chicago is Exhibit A in what happens when the police back off from enforcing public order, having been told that maintaining control of the streets constitutes racial oppression.”

The Chicago police would do their job, if the criminals they arrested would not be released even more quickly by the magistrates than the time it takes to book them. But if they are arrested on a FEDERAL charge (felons in possession of a firearm), and tried on Federal statutes, then it would much easier to send them into exile. Say in some distant Federal facility, where accomplices and “family” would find it difficult to communicate with them, causing a swift dissolution of the ties with the wider criminal element in the “hometown”.

I don’t believe the Feds need permission to prosecute Federal crimes.

That was the idea. That and five hard years with no parole.

Or, alternately, the citizens of Chicago could go armed, as is their constitutional right, and after a short period of “adjustment” the police could just disband.

Since Ferguson, the Ferguson police department has been running at 60 percent strength. That’s three years straight. The Berkeley Police Department, just west of them is running at 50 percent strength. They too, suffered greatly from the protests.

St. Louis County lost so many officers that they are hiring EVERYONE in the police academy, which typically has some “free agents” who can get recruited to other police agencies.

There are police agencies in St. Louis county that have NO applicants, or not enough to fill vacancies, a problem that has NEVER arisen.

About 18 months ago, in an effort to draw potential candidates from the “affected areas”, they ran a general job fair. They had over one hundred candidates show up from the affected areas.

Only seven could pass the background. Of those, ALL of them washed out in the next phase of screening.

In my bachelor’s classes in Criminal Justice, NOT ONE person wanted to be a police officer, and we are talking at least thirty different individuals. They all wanted pre-law or to be probation officers.

St. Louis City will lose at least 100 officers to St. Louis County because of the pay bump County just got. St. Louis City is already understaffed by at least 150 officers and cannot send people through the academy fast enough to replace them.

The Ferguson effect is very real and it is nationwide. I curse Jay Nixon daily and the fool Highway Patrol Captain they put in charge during the riots. They allowed this fester instead of being strong and it spread like a cancer. Well, many police got tired of it, got out and told everyone else to stay out of the field.

People did not need much reinforcement after seeing the debacles in Ferguson and Baltimore. I personally tell every young person that I see not to get into police work.
