With the expense of maintaining a home in your district and DC (very expensive city) it would be tough for a Congress member who isn't rich.
My solution, build a dorm. Security on the Republican side to protect against liberal nut job shooters, security on the sun side to protect the children of the district from the pedophile within.

I’m not going back to the article but I hope he’s not saying his airfare back and forth (DC/UT) is taxpayer paid....
>>
Uh, yep...

“If he had a proper home in Washington rather than a cot in his office, Chaffetz said, he wouldn’t need to fly home every week on the taxpayers’ dime, and his wife, Julie, could visit more often.”
>

I like the idea of an earlier post, fits here as well: Let ‘em use the military transports. Pilot and crew need the training, it’s a WIN-WIN!

Good for the boys is good enough for the shits in D.C.

Strap their asses to the walls and let ‘em have at it. The perfumed princes need to be taken down a notch or two; preferably, to the FLOOR.

Awww, poor POOR little Congress critter(s). Here’s the smallest violin I could find...

IMO, they need to pay MORE out-of-pocket. Maybe that’ll start whittling down the career politicians. But, of course, how can one make bank off the taxpayer dime if they don’t stick around long enough?

4hr commute too much? Yeah, for the people whom actually WORK for a living. Those roads are packed w/ people whom make a LOT less than these pieces of shit in Congress, but they do it everyday.

What next will they be griping and whining about? Having to pay for their car rental/payments? Gym membership? Interns? Stamps? Haircuts? Hell, even their meals (I’d be $$ of do-nuts) are majorly paid by lobbyists.

I can’t think of much they DO pay themselves. Sure isn’t the big ticket items (security, pension, etc.)

Even willing to wager your ‘friend’ around the corner got some pretty SWEET loans from the bank *wink wink, nudge, nudge*. How many more does he own on the row/’hood? I mean even ol’ Bernie *only* has 6...

Means test the F* out of the swamp; they *should* be paying for as much as they can on their own. Public service should be just that.

Sounds like the minimum wage argument. Why stop at $2500 ?
Lets say $5000.

The cheapest solution would be to build Congress some dormitory type buildings that they would have to live in while they were in session. They would be fed in a cafeteria, hauled to the hill on a bus, and perhaps they would then shorten their sessions in order to return home to more comfortable surroundings.

Make you a deal Chaffetz........

Give us Term Limits and we’ll give you a housing stipend.....but $2,500 is over the top......it will be less than that......your high income already includes a housing allowance.....maybe we’ll give you $1k/mo. additional for the DC area - but not without Term Limits......

That’s one way to get a $30,000.00 a year raise without asking for one.

Getting raises without asking or voting on them has never been a problem for Congress. They've gotten automatic raises for years.

WE PAY YOUR A@@ $164k + PERKS YEARLY, PAY YOUR HEALTH CARE TOO. You work less than teachers do they work 230+ days, you ‘work’ 130 days a year, in fact you don’t even write your own legislation, lobbyist and interns do, you do vacation a tremendous amount of a work year, at tax payers expense.

Can’t afford 2 multi-million mansions with butler, chef, cleaning staff, start by cutting your own expenses. You don’t need 2 sets of the above. YOU SURE DON’T WORK THE NUMBER OF HRS TO EARN EVEN $10,000 PER YEAR. YOU ARE OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY. GROW UP!

DRAIN THE SWAMP, YOU ARE JUST 1 OF THE HUNDREDS THAT NEED TO GO, YOU ARE HOOKED TO TAX SERFS DIME TO TIGHTLY. And have s BLOATED sense of what you are worth, just like those advocating for $15.00 but are only worth $6.00 an hr for the low skill job you perform.

Best idea for housing in DC - won’t make them want to stay forever!

One of my friends suggested this last year - in addition, hold sessions in convention centers around the country to not make anyone cozy where they are.

Yes, they need to be close to their voters. My suggestion is that we move the capitol to the geographic center of the US. The congress critters can have their offices in their districts and have remote meetings all day long. Maybe fly into the capitol once or twice a year to have the votes needed, where they would be housed in studio apartments or barracks. Everything can be done remotely these days and this would keep the critters close to their voters and make them more easily persuaded by the people in their districts.

Senators and Representatives being paid by the Federal Government is a conflict of interest.
Ditto for members of their staffs.
The Serveral States should pay their Senators, Representatives, and staff members, and provide for their expenses as the State Government sees fit.
I would recommend State consulates or embassies to house their congresscritters and their staffs to provide them with offices.

It's required by the Constitution, Article I, Section 6, Clause 1: "The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States."
