Just days before he resigns from Congress, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said Monday that House and Senate lawmakers should receive a $2,500 per month housing allowance — something he explained would help ease housing costs for members who can’t afford two mortgages or rents.
“I really do believe Congress would be much better served if there was a housing allowance for members of Congress,” Chaffetz told The Hill in an interview in his Capitol office, where he sleeps whenever he’s in Washington. “In today’s climate, nobody’s going to suggest or vote for a pay raise. But you shouldn’t have to be among the wealthiest of Americans to serve properly in Congress.”

I’d be for that to get the “common man” to run for office but they would have to cut their salaries to satisfy me. Can’t afford two mortgages or the expenses of two households on what - $170,000+ per year? Poor babies.
I have a better idea. If Congress confined itself to legitimate Constitutional powers, it could get all of its work done in 2-3 weeks.
People financially supported his campaign and supported it in other ways. Citizens went out and voted for him. What does he do for them? Quits.
He was given the opportunity to express his views. He should put a sock in it now.

Build a spartan Congressional barracks facility in Washington and be done with it.
Build them a dorm. Don’t buy every congresscritter a house in the DC area.

Here’s an Idea! Go home, everything but the vote can be handled from your districts.
The extra money would just raise rents further.
And that salary doesn’t include the cost/worth of their benefits.
In the 40s, freshmen congressmen often lived in boarding houses when in DC, I know because my grandmother operated one and had several stay there from time to time.
Worked then, would work now.
