We were at BMTE just off the airstrip down the dirt road, In Aug 68 a 4th Inf Div mech unit moved in behind us toward the airfield. In downtown BMT was B-23, an SF B team that was over Bu Prang, Duc Co, etc. After I was WIA the 155th AHC from BMT proper started flying our recon teams with the 20th SOS. The 155th AHC was near the MACV compound and PX.
We were the demons and devils out of phu hiep/tuy hoa, 134th AHC
On Our (my) first flight into ban me thuet, as we were on final over the runway, mortars hit the runway. We called to the tower, the tower asked if we were the bird over the runway, Captain Harris replied Roger that, the tower yelled, "Get the F*** out of there, we got incoming!" Harris pulled pitch so hard I believe he bent the collective upwards.
Stayed there for three or four days, cant recall. However, after being hit every night, we decided we were leaving, but the area was completely socked in in the am.
No prob, said the Cap'n. Cranked her up, low leveled over the center of the road, I believe road 26?, while the copilot held the map on his lap, looking out the chin bubble, until we broke through the pass and could see nha trang to the right, below us.
That was some VFR while in the clouds, lol!
