“””Japan’s coast guard is investigating why it took nearly an hour for a deadly collision between a U.S. Navy destroyer and a container ship to be reported.

A coast guard official said Monday they are trying to find out what the crew of the Philippine-flagged ACX Crystal was doing before reporting the collision”””

And when, if ever, did the USS Fitzgerald report the collision to the Japanese Coast Guard?

The ships collided early Saturday morning, when the Navy said most of the 300 sailors on board would have been sleeping.

"most"?

Perhaps "all"?

This story about two ships colliding is NOT BELIEVABLE.

Their radar would have been going off the rails alerting them to a collision.

Was John Smith the captain of both ships?

If our Navy’s destroyers cannot avoid a large slow moving cargo ship then they have no chance against a torpedo.

Or was this done intentionally by whomever was at the helm of the destroyer?

Was no one awake on the tincan ?

OD, XO & Captain will be Courts-Marshalled.

We still have Barry's cruise liners.

Terrorism? How else does a tanker broadside a Destroyer? But how in the world did the Destroyer let itself get in the way of such a large ship? I thought the Titanic and Carpathia taught us not to turn off the electronics.

I don’t understand how a Navy destroyer could not know a ship was nearing them. These are hi-tech precision systems.

The Navy says they are sticking to the later time for the collision.

We still only have photos and a track on the container ship.

The destroyer was not in a war zone.

There are explanations for why they were hit.

Nobody knows yet what the container ship was saying on the radio.

It is possible that they were using the radio to lure the destroyer closer.

What I’m not going to do is disparage our Sailors when we don’t have enough facts.

USS Fitzgerald

The Irony!!!

Jack's PT boat was adrift at night

when it was rammed by a Japanese

tincan in WWII.

None of this makes sense.

If it was a pure accident the incompetence level aboard the destroyer is off the charts.

If it wasn’t a pure accident and they were engaged in some sort of stealthy operation what was the captain doing off the bridge?

Was the container ship suspected of something - like transporting a dirty bomb?

Were they maneuvering in pursuit of the container ship and it backfired?

We would have noticed a large ship acting erratically that close to us, and would certainly have called the captain to the bridge well before the collision.

Even at 500 yards it would have been simple for the DDG to put the helm over to starboard and pass behind the freighter, and freighters don’t get within 500 yards of a Navy ship without somebody noticing.

I’ve seen the freighter’s track; I’d like to see the DDG’s.

Both ships were probably playing chicken.
They were probably trying to figure a way to cover that up.

Helm! Hard Port!!! No, No, No, Starboard! Nooooo! Oops!

Something like that?

Sorry, it’’s not even funny. Somebody really screwed up.

This is bizarre. Perhaps a loss of steering function?
How much control redundancy is built into a navel ship like this?

There is a history of Philippine vessels, and irregularities. IE; Dona Paz, MV Vector, and other Sea disasters.
