“That doesn’t explain why, after ramming the Navy Ship, it was able to turn and continue on it’s journey at high speed with no apparent steering or propulsion problems.”

I don’t know what happened, of course, but it could have had problems which were fixed. One can’t look at those circumstances and be sure that something is hinky. That remains to be investigated.

>> And I’m finding a disturbing lack of curiosity for the facts

You are correct in your reservations which I noted earlier today. I’m following up now to point out that the facts are still forthcoming which include strange maneuvers by the freighter.

If the US ship was “ targeted” then why just hit it with a glancing blow as if if the Crystal came from astern alongside and was in process of breaking hard starboard when contact occurred ( from looks of damage) ?

If the container ship was hitting the Fitz on a t-bone crossing , it could or would not have stopped and would have plowed straight through her

Sea Lane rage?

I mean, that sweeping turn to starbord, with the sudden u-turn at the end...

I’m damned if that doesn’t look for all the world like an intentional intercept.

I’m not Navy, nor even a mariner, but a half-drunk pool shark could look at those lines and come away suspecting there was somebody aiming to put the 8-ball in the side pocket.

Oh but it has been that way for awhile now. No matter how serious the subject matter there are always people trying to impress with sarcasm or jokes. Never quite understood it. I don’t much care for the overly cynical viewpoints either.

If they don’t scrap the ship this will be a T&M job - meaning 80% of the value of a new ship.

The US DDG has a top speed of 40knots and can do a 180 in about 1 mile.

It can track hundreds of surface targets simultaneously.

But it could not evade a 39,000 ton cargo ship?

Nay, the collision was 100% the fault of the US crew. Even if the cargo vessel was TRYING to hit the destroyer.

The master of the Fitzgerald is not faultless, but there’s a hell of a difference between negligent navigation and failure to avoid the consequences of an intentional act by another vessel.

Any intentional act by a ship as large as that container ship should have been easily countered using the DDG’S superior maneuverability. Somebody (or multiple somebodies) made one or more major mistakes in not avoiding the collision.

Not arguing that fact. Just saying in this instance it might be a situation in which there is a ‘split of fault’. Like I said previously, there is a BIG difference in negligent navigation and failure to avoid an INTENTIONAL act. Will need to wait for a full investigation and subsequent details/facts before seeing if ‘split of fault’ is indeed warranted.

I heard there are more admirals than ships now. And what are those admirals doing with their time?

’ ...should have been easily countered using the DDG’S superior maneuverability.’

This should be a wakeup call for the navy:

GET BACK TO BASICS!

Don’t let other ships collide with yours even if you need to attack them. Shots across the bow, a shot ON the bow, shots, etc etc.

Our navy needs to take responsibility for this. They should be prepared for such contingencies. They have enough admirals to deal with things like that, and pop-test situations with drone ships should become routine.

Meet Admiral Jan Tighe:

She says the key to keeping ahead in the cyber-warefare game isn't in having smarter people, its in having more "diversity".

What did Obama do to our navy?

Why aren’t there drone vessels testing for contingencies like this? The tech is cheap now — but as always the world suffers with mental laziness and distracted brains.
